Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Guardhouse

We returned to the Queen Anne estate at two in the morning. The rain had cleared, leaving a crisp, freezing mist hanging over the manicured lawns.

Luca carried me upstairs to the nursery suite to check on Emma. My little girl was sleeping soundly, clutching a brand-new plush teddy bear that Luca had ordered for her, her breathing completely clear and regular. Seeing her safe filled my chest with overwhelming gratitude.

After checking the perimeter monitors in his private study, Luca escorted me to the master bedroom. A massive king-sized bed dominated the room, flanked by panoramic glass walls overlooking the twinkling lights of the Seattle skyline.

“You should sleep,” Luca said, unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket and placing it over the armchair. “Dr. Marchetti wants you off that foot as much as possible for the next forty-eight hours.”

“Where will you sleep?” I asked softly, sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Luca paused, his dark eyes meeting mine in the dim, golden light of the bedside lamps. “There is an adjoining suite across the hall.”

“Luca.”

He stopped.

“Stay,” I whispered, my voice barely above the rustle of the silk sheets. “Please. I don’t want to be alone tonight.”

A heavy, electric silence filled the room. Luca looked at me for a long moment before nodding slowly. He kicked off his dress shoes, removed his tie and cufflinks, and lay down on top of the covers beside me.

I curled onto my side, resting my head against his broad shoulder. His arm instinctively wrapped around me, pulling me gently against his side. His body heat was immense, a roaring furnace against the cold Seattle night. For the first time in eighteen months, the crushing loneliness and dread that had haunted my sleep vanished entirely. I fell into a deep, dreamless slumber.

Three hours later, a deafening sound shattered the night.

BOOM!

The entire mansion rattled. The floor-to-ceiling windows vibrated in their steel frames. Red emergency lights instantly flooded the bedroom, and a piercing alarm siren began wailing through the walls.

Luca was awake and moving before my eyes could even focus.

In a single fluid motion, he pulled a customized black Glock from the nightstand safe and racked the slide. “Ava, stay down!”

The internal intercom crackled to life with static and gunfire. Dante’s panicked voice shouted through the speaker: “Boss! Breach at the secondary gatehouse! It wasn’t an external assault—it was an inside job! Guard Captain Vance was compromised! He disabled the infrared grid and let two Volkov strike teams into the courtyard!”

My heart plummeted into my stomach. “Emma!” I screamed, throwing off the covers.

“Emma’s bunker is sealed on lockdown protocol,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of any panic. “Nobody gets in without my biometric scan. But they are coming up the grand staircase for you.”

Footsteps—heavy, tactical boots—echoed rapidly up the marble hallway outside our bedroom door.

Luca stepped in front of me, planting himself between me and the reinforced mahogany door like an unyielding wall of steel.

“Ava,” Luca whispered, not taking his eyes off the entryway. “Close your eyes.”

BANG!

The bedroom door was blown off its hinges with a breaching charge.

Two masked Russian mercenaries in tactical armor lunged through the smoke, automatic rifles raised.

Luca didn't flinch. He fired three precise shots in rapid succession.

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Both men collapsed to the floor before their weapons could even level. A third gunman appeared in the doorway, spraying a volley of bullets that shredded the walnut wardrobe and shattered the antique mirror.

Luca dove, rolling across the Persian rug, and fired upward through the wooden doorframe. The third attacker dropped with a choked gasp.

From the hallway, a familiar, grating voice sneered through the gunsmoke.

“Castellano! You can't protect her forever!”

Jake Martinez.

He was standing behind a fourth mercenary, holding a sawed-off shotgun, his eyes wild with cocaine-fueled mania. “Give me the girl's trust documents, or we blow this whole floor to hell!”

Luca rose from the floor, his face completely bathed in red emergency light, looking like the devil himself emerging from the flames of hell.

“You should have run to Mexico, Jake,” Luca growled.

Before Jake could pull the trigger, Dante appeared behind him in the hallway like a vengeful shadow, slamming the butt of a heavy shotgun into Jake’s skull. Jake collapsed instantly, unconscious and bleeding, as Dante’s men swept the corridor, neutralizing the remaining intruders in a brutal, ten-second firefight.

Silence returned to the mansion, broken only by the hiss of fire extinguishers and the distant wail of police sirens that Luca’s private dispatch would soon redirect.

Luca turned to Dante, his chest rising and falling evenly. “Secure the perimeter. Check on the bunker.”

“Bunker is untouched, Boss. The little girl is sound asleep,” Dante confirmed, breathing heavily.

Luca looked down at the unconscious, bleeding body of Jake Martinez lying in the hallway.

“Take him to Warehouse 9 at the docks,” Luca commanded, his voice cold as absolute zero. “It’s time to end this.”
