Chapter 4 - Safe Behind Fortified Walls

The Castellano estate was not just a penthouse; it was an impenetrable fortress built atop Queen Anne Hill, spanning four acres of gated grounds surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, infrared perimeter sensors, and armed private security.

By three o’clock in the morning, Emma had been examined by a pediatric specialist flown in via private helicopter from Portland. She was tucked into a massive king-sized bed in the nursery suite, breathing smoothly and deeply through a pediatric oxygen concentrator, her fever completely broken thanks to top-tier medications.

I sat in an adjoining velvet armchair, watching my daughter’s chest rise and fall in steady, effortless rhythms. For the first time in eighteen months, the wheezing rattle was gone.

A soft knock sounded at the open door. Luca stepped in, carrying a tray with chamomile tea and a plate of fresh fruit and warm brioche. He had changed into a dark cashmere sweater and dark slacks, looking slightly less like a warlord and more like a devastatingly handsome aristocrat.

“She’s sleeping peacefully,” Luca said quietly, setting the tray on the side table.

“I haven't heard her breathe like that since she was one year old,” I murmured, blinking back tears. “How much did that pediatric specialist cost? The equipment?”

Luca pulled up a chair opposite me, his long legs stretching out. “Do not insult me by asking about money, Ava. To me, money is merely paper. Her health is non-negotiable.”

I looked down at the steaming cup of tea, wrapping my cold fingers around the porcelain. “You’re doing so much for us. But the world you live in... it terrifies me, Luca. I’ve seen the news. Car bombs in Tacoma. Warehouses burning in the industrial district. Is this really where Emma belongs?”

Luca’s expression turned solemn. “The violence in my world exists because men without discipline seek power without purpose. My family built Seattle’s modern infrastructure. We protect the businesses that the corrupt police force ignores. But I won't lie to you—there are wolves at the gates. Jake Martinez invited those wolves directly to your doorstep.”

“Why Emma?” I asked, my voice trembling with raw grief. “Why would a father do that to his own flesh and blood?”

Luca’s jaw clenched, a muscle ticking beneath his skin. “Because Jake Martinez is a sociopath who views human beings as financial assets. He knows that as long as Emma is alive, she is the sole legal beneficiary of your grandfather’s offshore trust—a trust that activates on her fourth birthday, worth upwards of twelve million dollars.”

I gasped, nearly spilling my tea. “Grandfather’s trust? But my dad said that money was lost in the 2008 crash!”

“Your father lied to protect you from Jake,” Luca revealed calmly. “Arthur knew Jake was sniffing around your family’s estate. He locked the funds in a blind trust in Zurich, accessible only by Emma upon turning four, with you as the sole executor. Jake discovered the paperwork last month. If he kidnaps Emma and takes her across international borders, he can force you to sign over power of attorney.”

The sheer monstrousness of Jake’s plan hit me like a physical blow. He didn’t just want to evade his gambling debts—he wanted to steal my child’s future and leave us both dead in a ditch once the paperwork was signed.

“He will never touch her,” I swore, my voice trembling with fierce, motherly hatred.

“He won’t,” Luca agreed, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute finality. “Because tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, the County Clerk and an officiant will arrive here. We will sign the civil marriage registry. By noon, the entire West Coast will know that Ava Carter is Ava Castellano. And any man who looks at you or your child with malicious intent will answer to the full might of my empire.”

I looked at the man before me—a man feared by politicians, judges, and killers alike—yet sitting quietly in a nursery, pouring tea for an exhausted mother.

“I’ll marry you, Luca,” I whispered. “To save Emma. But tell me one thing.”

“Anything.”

“When this war is over... what happens to us?”

May you like

Luca stared at me for a long, electric moment, the silence between us vibrating with unsaid promises.

“When this war is over, Ava,” he whispered, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his fingers burning against my skin, “if you wish to leave, I will give you a mansion anywhere in the world and half my fortune. But I promise you... by then, you won’t want to leave.”
