Chapter 13 - Cleansing the Empire

Within forty-eight hours of the battle at Pier 54, the underworld landscape of the Pacific Northwest was completely rewritten.

Sergei Volkov was handed over to the United States Department of Justice alongside a four-hundred-page dossier compiled by Luca’s private intelligence firm, detailing twenty years of international human trafficking, money laundering, and racketeering. The Russian syndicate in Washington State was dismantled permanently, its leadership facing multiple life sentences in federal supermax prisons.

Jake Martinez’s body was recovered by the Coast Guard near Bainbridge Island the following morning. The police report declared it an accidental drowning following an underworld dispute—a closed case with no further investigation.

More importantly, Luca fulfilled the final part of his promise to my late father.

On a bright Tuesday morning, a team of forensic accountants and corporate lawyers arrived at the Queen Anne estate. Every single dollar of my father’s stolen $300,000 retirement fund was recovered from Jake’s frozen offshore accounts, along with the full activation of my grandfather’s $12 million trust fund in Zurich, legally secured under Emma’s name with me as the sole, irrevocable trustee until her twenty-fifth birthday.

I sat in Luca’s grand library, staring at the financial ledgers that guaranteed my daughter would never experience a single day of poverty, hunger, or lack for the rest of her life.

Luca walked in, carrying a cup of herbal tea. He set it before me and sat on the edge of the mahogany desk, watching me with quiet satisfaction.

“You are a very wealthy woman in your own right now, Ava,” Luca murmured softly. “You have your inheritance. You have the trust fund. You have the legal power to take Emma and buy an estate anywhere in the world—Paris, London, Maui.”

I looked up from the documents, meeting his dark, intense gaze.

“Is that what you want, Luca? For us to leave?”

Luca’s jaw hardened slightly, a flicker of vulnerability passing through his eyes before he could hide it. He reached out, gently touching the gold wedding band resting on my left finger.

“Our marriage began as a contract to keep you safe from wolves,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a low, husky whisper. “The wolves are dead. The contract is fulfilled. I will never hold you prisoner in my world, Ava. If you walk away, you take my blessing and half my empire.”

I stood up from the leather chair. My ankle was fully healed, strong and pain-free.

I took two steps forward until I was standing between Luca’s knees as he sat on the edge of the desk. I placed my hands on his broad shoulders, looking directly into the soul of the man who had carried me through the storm.

“Do you remember what you told me the night you brought us here?” I asked softly.

Luca’s breath hitched. “I told you that by the time the war was over... you wouldn't want to leave.”

May you like

“You were right,” I whispered, leaning up on my tiptoes. “I don't want to be anywhere else in the world, Luca. My home is right here with you.”

A look of pure, overwhelming triumph and emotion washed over Luca’s face. He wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, lifting me effortlessly against his chest, and captured my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our souls together forever.
