Chapter 4 - A Guardian's Silent Defiance

The morning dragged on inside the mansion with an eerie, suffocating silence. While Sabina remained locked inside the guest suite making calculated calls to her conspirators, Rosamund moved through the grand estate with steady, quiet purpose.
Through the subterranean monitors, Chadworth watched Rosamund walk the girls to their private school transport at the front gates, ensuring their coats were buttoned tight against the autumn chill. She gave each of them a small, handwritten note tucked inside their lunchboxes.
“What are those notes?” Chadworth asked Marcus.
Marcus zoomed in the exterior high-definition optical camera near the driveway pillar, capturing the text on the folded paper Lorelai was reading: ‘You are strong, you are brave, and you are loved beyond measure. Keep your chin up today, Little Captain. — Rosa’
Chadworth felt a tight knot form in his throat. Eleanor used to call Lorelai ‘Little Captain.’ Rosamund had remembered, keeping Eleanor’s memory alive for the girls when Chadworth had been too consumed by grief and work to even speak his late wife’s name without breaking down.
Once the school transport cleared the gates, Rosamund returned to the house, but instead of retreating to her chores, she walked with purpose down toward the basement storage archives.
“Where is she going?” Chadworth whispered.
“That’s the sub-archive where Mrs. Eleanor’s personal belongings were stored after her passing,” Marcus answered, switching feeds to Monitor 18.
In the dim lighting of the storage archive, Rosamund pulled a small, locked metal lockbox from behind a row of old photo albums. She used a small key hanging from a chain around her neck to open it. Inside were not stolen jewels or cash, but medical journals, pharmaceutical receipts, and handwritten diaries dated three years prior—the final months of Eleanor Prescott’s illness.
Chadworth’s heart hammered against his ribs. “What is she holding?”
Rosamund pulled out a worn notebook and flipped through the pages, comparing the handwriting inside with a printed document she pulled from her apron pocket. She looked around nervously, her hands trembling, before pulling out her phone and taking high-resolution photographs of every single page.
“Look at the header on that pharmaceutical receipt,” Marcus said, enhancing the image on the secondary display. “That isn't Eleanor’s hospice care provider. That’s a private distributor registered to an LLC in Delaware.”
“Trace the LLC,” Chadworth ordered, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. “Do it right now.”
Marcus’s fingers flew across the keyboard. Within two minutes, the encrypted corporate registry cracked open. The beneficial owner of the private distributor was a shell corporation managed directly by Julian Croft, with monthly distributions paid to Sabina Vance under her maiden name.
Chadworth staggered back from the desk, gripping his hair in disbelief. Eleanor hadn't just succumbed to an unpredictable, rapid-onset degenerative illness; her decline had coincided with Sabina’s introduction into their social circle as Eleanor’s ‘wellness and holistic nutritionist.’

The horror of the reality was almost too massive to process. Sabina hadn't simply targeted Chadworth for his fortune; she had systematically removed Eleanor, positioned herself as the comforting shoulder for a grieving billionaire, and was now preparing to eliminate the last obstacles—his daughters and the one housekeeper who suspected the truth.
“Rosamund knew,” Chadworth breathed, his voice raw with agony. “She didn't come here just to clean my house. She came here to protect Eleanor’s children because she knew Eleanor was murdered.”
