Chapter 14 - Healing the Wounds of the Past

Six months passed, bringing with them the vibrant blossoms of spring.

The Prescott Estate had transformed completely. The dark, intimidating security gates were now flanked by blooming cherry blossoms and colorful flowerbeds planted by Lorelai, Gemma, and Rosamund. The sterile, cold modern art in the grand hallways had been replaced with children’s framed watercolor paintings, family photographs, and Eleanor’s cherished antique book collection.

Under Rosamund’s leadership, the Clara & Eleanor Foundation had already helped crack open four major cold cases involving domestic exploitation, securing safe shelter and legal representation for over two hundred vulnerable children across the state. Rosamund split her time between directing the foundation’s legal advocacy center and being home every afternoon for family dinners.

Chadworth had become the father he had always wanted to be. He coached Gemma’s youth soccer team on Saturday mornings, attended every single one of Lorelai’s school science fairs, and spent quiet evenings cooking dinner side-by-side with Rosamund in the sunny kitchen where fear had once reigned.

Their relationship had grown naturally, rooted not in social status or public appearances, but in deep mutual respect, shared values, and an unspoken understanding of life’s fragility.

One warm May evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon casting a golden glow across the rolling lawns of the estate, Chadworth took Rosamund’s hand as they walked together past the rose gardens.

“Do you remember the night I pretended to leave for Canada?” Chadworth asked softly, looking out over the peaceful grounds.

Rosamund smiled, leaning her head gently against his shoulder. “I remember thinking that if I had to spend the rest of my life scrubbing floors just to keep those little girls safe from Sabina, it would be worth every second.”

Chadworth stopped walking and turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.

“You saved my daughters, Rosa,” Chadworth whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved Eleanor’s legacy. And you saved me from a life of hollow emptiness. For years, I thought my job was to build an empire of concrete and steel. But you taught me that the only empire that matters is the one built on love, honesty, and protection.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box.

Inside was not a flashy, twelve-million-dollar celebrity diamond, but a delicate, custom-crafted platinum ring set with three small, brilliant sapphires—symbolizing the three souls she had protected and healed: Lorelai, Gemma, and Chadworth.

“Rosamund Kelly,” Chadworth said, dropping to one knee on the lush green grass, his eyes shining with profound love. “Will you do us the honor of becoming our family, truly and forever? Will you marry me?”
