Chapter 3 - Stepping Into the Dragon’s Den

Claire hesitated on the wet pavement. “I don’t know you, Mr. Mercer. I know the rumors.”
“If you believed the rumors, you wouldn’t have stepped between me and a bullet tonight,” Gabriel replied, his voice unexpectedly gentle. “Get inside before you freeze. I do not harm those who bleed for me.”
Claire took a deep breath and stepped into the leather-scented warmth of the limousine. As Elias slid into the driver's seat and sped into the neon-lit night, Gabriel handed her a warm cashmere blanket and a porcelain cup of steaming green tea.
“Drink. Your hands are shaking,” he commanded softly.
Thirty minutes later, the elevator opened directly into a magnificent two-story penthouse overlooking the entire harbor. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed cargo ships moving like quiet giants across the black water. The walls were lined with ancient Japanese calligraphy, rare art, and towering shelves of leather-bound books.
Gabriel unbuttoned his vest, poured two fingers of amber whisky, and set a thick manila folder on the glass table between them.
“Three years ago, Dr. Thomas Bennett passed away,” Gabriel began, watching her face closely. “He was one of the foremost authorities on archaic naval dialects and covert encrypted communication in the Pacific Rim. You lived with him in Kyoto and Yokohama for eight years.”
Claire stared at him in shock. “You investigated me?”
“Elias ran your background the moment you opened your mouth at the Monarch,” Gabriel admitted without apology. “Your father’s work was legendary. And tonight, you proved that his genius lives on in you.”
He opened the folder, revealing high-resolution photographs of handwritten documents filled with a blend of obscure kanji, military jargon, and coded symbols.
“This was intercepted from a shipping conglomerate trying to seize control of my legitimate freight lines,” Gabriel said, leaning forward, his intense gaze locking onto hers. “My translators have spent three weeks trying to crack it. They failed. If this shipment clears customs tomorrow night, three hundred tons of illegal weapons will be funneled through my docks, framing my company and destroying everything I built to honor my family.”
Claire looked down at the paper. Her eyes scanned the intricate brushstrokes. Within ten seconds, her linguistic instincts ignited.
“It’s not modern Japanese,” she murmured, tracing a character with her fingertip. “It’s an old Meiji-era merchant cipher combined with regional dialect from southern Kyushu. It’s an inside ledger.”
Gabriel’s eyes dilated with fierce admiration. “Can you read it?”

Claire looked up, meeting the gaze of the most feared man in the city. “I can translate every single word. But if I do this for you... my life changes forever, doesn't it?”
“It does,” Gabriel promised, his voice low and magnetic. “You will never work in a dirty restaurant again. You will have safety, wealth, and the full protection of my name. Work for me, Claire. Be my voice where others only hear silence.”
