Chapter 10 - THE ULTIMATUM AT THE WAREHOUSE

My phone buzzed violently against the metal table.
An unknown number.
I stared at the screen before pressing answer and putting it on speaker.
“Hello, little waitress,” Marco Vitelli’s smooth, venomous voice purred through the speaker.
“Did you enjoy the fireworks?”
“Marco,” I answered, my voice steady and cold.
“If you want the ledger, come and get it.”
A brief laugh echoed on the line.
“Brave words for a girl who was trembling behind a restaurant bar just days ago.”
“Meet me at Pier 48 in one hour.”
“Bring the book and Dante's head, or your little roommate downtown gets a bullet in her spine.”
The line went dead with a harsh click.
I looked up at Dante.
“He has Chloe,” I whispered in horror.
“She’s my best friend. She has nothing to do with this.”
Dante’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice.
“Vitelli just signed his own death warrant,” Dante said, cocking his submachine gun.
“We’re going to Pier 48.”
“Both of us.”
“No,” I said, picking up the revolver from the desk.
“This is my fight too.”
Dante looked at me for a long, intense moment.

Then he nodded once.
“Stay behind me, Emma. Always.”
