Chapter 12 - BULLETS, BETRAYAL, AND BURNING BRIDGES

“Let Chloe go,” I demanded, holding my ground despite my shaking knees.
“Drop the book and the gun first,” Marco replied, cocking his pistol.
Before I could move, a gunshot shattered the glass skylight above.
“Don't do it, Emma!” Dante’s voice thundered down from the rafters.
Hell broke loose in an instant.
Dante dropped from the overhead crane, landing squarely on top of one of Vitelli’s armed guards.
Gunfire erupted, echoing deafeningly off the metal walls.
Sparks showered down as bullets struck steel containers.
Marco grabbed Chloe by the hair, using her as a human shield while dragging her toward the rear exit.
“Drop your weapon, Moretti, or the girl dies!” Marco screamed over the gunfire, pressing his barrel against Chloe’s neck.
Dante froze, his gun lowered by a fraction of an inch.
That was all the opening Marco needed.
He backed toward the exit, dragging Chloe into the freezing night air.
I sprinted down the metal catwalk, ignoring the bullets whistling past my ears.
I reached the emergency ladder, sliding down the rungs in a blur of scraped palms and desperate adrenaline.
Bursting out through the rear metal doors into the rain, I saw Marco pushing Chloe into the back of a waiting getaway car.

Dante was pinned down by sniper fire behind a stack of wooden crates.
I raised my revolver, squinting through the stinging rain, and pulled the trigger.
