Chapter 6 - A TRAITOR AMONG THE SOLDIERS

The panic room was silent, save for the hum of emergency generators.
I paced the small concrete enclosure like a caged animal.
Ten minutes felt like ten lifetimes.
My thumb hovered over the red panic button.
Suddenly, the security monitor flickered to life.
On screen, Dante was fighting two masked men in the grand hallway.
Blood stained his white shirt.
He disarmed the first attacker with brutal efficiency, but the second struck him from behind with a rifle butt.
Dante dropped to one knee.
The masked man raised his weapon for the killing blow.
I slammed my palm down on the red button.
A loud mechanical hiss echoed through the hidden walls.
The bookcase concealing the panic room swung outward.
I grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the nearby table.
As the masked man stepped toward the opening, I swung with all my might.
The heavy brass struck his temple with a sickening crunch.
He crumpled to the floor.
Dante looked up, wiping blood from his forehead, breathing heavily.
“Remind me never to corner you,” Dante muttered, pulling himself up.
“Are you okay?” I asked, dropping the candlestick.
“I’ve had better Thursdays,” he groaned, checking his pistol clip.
“Who was helping them get inside?” I demanded, looking at the security feeds.
“The outer gates were bypassed using an internal code.”
May you like
Dante’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
“We have a rat in the inner circle.”
