Chapter 14 - THE WAR ENDS IN ASHES

The blade flashed silver in the sodium streetlights.

Dante deflected the slash with his left forearm, taking a shallow cut, and drove his fist straight into Marco’s jaw.

Marco crumpled to the wet asphalt, dropping his knife.

Dante stood over him, breathing heavily, his knuckles bleeding.

Sirens wailed in the distance—federal agents and local police tipped off by Dante’s clean captains.

“It’s over, Marco,” Dante said, kicking the knife away.

“You’re going away for the rest of your natural life.”

Marco spat blood and smiled a broken, bloody smile.

“The city will never be yours, Moretti.”

“Someone else will always take my place.”

“Let them try,” Dante replied coldly as federal agents swarmed the pier, slapping handcuffs on the fallen crime lord.

Chloe ran into my arms, sobbing tears of pure relief.

I held her tightly, then looked back across the wet asphalt.

Dante stood alone under the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers.

The war that had defined his entire life—and stolen mine—was finally over.

As the rain washed the blood from the concrete, Dante met my eyes across the chaotic scene.

For the first time since I stepped into the Augustine Hotel ballroom, the shadows in his eyes were completely gone.
