Chapter 9 - The Broken Mirror

That evening, after the capos had departed, Chloe stood before the full-length gilded mirror in the master suite’s dressing room.
She wore only a silk slip. She looked at her reflection—her swollen, thirty-four-week belly stretching the fabric, the faint silvery stretch marks tracing the sides of her hips, her breasts heavy and full, her thighs thicker than they had ever been.
Old insecurities, drilled into her by a society obsessed with impossible standards, whispered in the back of her mind.
Arthur walked into the dressing room, barefoot and wearing loose linen trousers. He stopped behind her, his dark eyes meeting hers in the glass.
“What are you thinking, sweetheart?” he asked softly.
“I look like a whale, Arthur,” she muttered self-consciously, trying to cover her belly with her hands. “I’m huge. My ankles are swollen, and my skin is stretching, and...”
Arthur didn't say a word. He stepped closer, gently pulling her hands away from her stomach.
He dropped to his knees behind her.
Chloe gasped as Arthur’s warm, calloused hands slid over her hips, tracing the curves of her thighs before resting tenderly over the round dome of her belly. He leaned forward and pressed a warm, reverent kiss directly against the stretch marks on her hip.
“You are carrying my son,” Arthur whispered against her skin, his voice thick with unadulterated worship. “Every mark on your body is a badge of honor. Every curve is proof of the life you are giving us. You have never been more beautiful to me than you are right now.”
He stood up, wrapping his arms around her from behind, pulling her back against his chest so they could both look into the mirror together.

“Look at yourself, Chloe,” he commanded gently. “You are magnificent. You are my queen. And there isn't a supermodel or socialite on this planet who could ever compare to the woman standing in front of me.”
Tears spilled over Chloe’s lashes, but this time they were tears of profound, healing joy. She leaned back against him, turning her head to capture his lips in a deep, passionate kiss that reaffirmed every broken piece of her soul.
