Chapter 14 - The First Cry and the King's Surrender

Three days after little Leo was born, the blizzard finally cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, sun-drenched landscape of sparkling white snow and crystal-blue skies over Lake Michigan.
The master bedroom was warm, filled with dozens of bouquets of white roses and the soft, sweet sounds of a sleeping newborn in the antique mahogany cradle beside the bed.
Chloe was sitting up against the pillows, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, holding baby Leo against her shoulder.
Arthur walked into the room, carrying a tray with fresh fruit, warm tea, and a single velvet box.
He set the tray on the bedside table, then stood beside the bed, looking down at his family with an expression of complete, absolute surrender. The ruthless mafia don who had ruled a city with iron and blood was completely, utterly conquered by a curvy diner waitress and a seven-pound baby boy.
“Chloe,” Arthur said softly.
Chloe looked up at him, her almond eyes glowing with warmth.
Arthur didn't give a speech. He didn't make grand promises about power or wealth. Instead, he simply reached over, picked up the velvet box, and opened it.
The ten-carat emerald-cut diamond ring sparkled brilliantly in the morning sunlight.
He picked up the ring, holding it between his trembling fingers.
“I know I am a flawed man, Chloe,” Arthur whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I know my hands have done terrible things. But from the moment you threatened me with that skillet in your storeroom, my life belonged to you. Will you do me the greatest honor in this world? Will you marry me, Chloe? Truly, legally, and forever?”
Chloe looked at the ring, then down at their sleeping son, and finally up into the dark, devoted eyes of the only man she had ever loved.
She extended her left hand.
“Only if you promise never to break my deadbolts again,” she whispered, a tear of pure joy rolling down her cheek.

Arthur let out a wet, breathless laugh. He slid the heavy diamond ring onto her fourth finger. It fit perfectly.
He leaned down, cupping her face, and kissed her with a deep, reverent passion that sealed their souls together forever.
