Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Secret and the Midnight Diagnosis

The underground ambulance bay of the Romano Medical Pavilion was bathed in harsh fluorescent light and the acrid smell of burning rubber.

Before the reinforced black Suburban had even come to a complete stop, Arthur kicked the heavy door open.

“Gabriel! Get out here now!”

Dr. Gabriel Vance, a former battlefield surgeon who had spent the last fifteen years on the Romano family payroll patching up bullet wounds and quiet assassinations, was already sprinting across the concrete with a trauma gurney and four senior nurses in tow.

“What do we have, Boss?” Gabriel barked, skidding to a halt as Arthur stepped out, carrying Chloe in his arms.

Gabriel froze for a fraction of a second when he saw the burgundy dress, the unmistakable curve of Chloe’s belly, and the bright crimson blood soaking through Arthur’s silk shirt.

“She’s twenty-eight weeks pregnant,” Arthur rasped, his voice cracking with a raw, jagged terror that Gabriel had never heard in the ten years he had served the Romano boss. “She collapsed at the cathedral. Severe physical exhaustion, hypothermia, and vaginal bleeding. If you lose either of them, Gabriel, I swear to God I will level this entire hospital.”

“Gurney! Now!” Gabriel shouted, ignoring the threat. “Arthur, let her down. Step back!”

Arthur laid Chloe onto the gurney with agonizing gentleness, his hands lingering on her cold, damp face until the nurses pulled the cart away, rushing her through the double pneumatic doors into Trauma Suite One.

Arthur moved to follow, but Leo Barnes stepped in front of him, planting two heavy hands on his chest.

“Arthur, stop. You can’t go in there. You’ll contaminate the field.”

“Get out of my way, Leo,” Arthur growled, his eyes wild, his hands curling into fists.

“Look at yourself!” Leo snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, urgent whisper. “You are covered in her blood, Boss. The Crofts are mobilizing. Malcolm is already calling an emergency meeting of the Five Syndicates, claiming you broke the sacred treaty and threatened his daughter at the altar. If you don't get your head straight in the next ten minutes, we are going to be fighting a three-front war before sunrise!”

Arthur stared at his own palms. The crimson blood was tacky and warm against his skin. His blood. His child’s blood.

He leaned against the sterile, white wall of the corridor, his knees threatening to buckle under the crushing weight of his sins. He had walked away to protect her. He had believed that leaving Chloe in her simple, quiet world would keep her safe from the crosshairs of the Croft family. He had martyred himself on the altar of duty, trading his own soul to marry a woman he despised, all to prevent a war.

And the entire time, Chloe had been carrying his flesh and blood, alone, terrified, and hunted.

“How did she find out about the wine?” Arthur whispered, his voice hollow.

Leo pulled an encrypted tablet from his suit jacket, scrolling through rapid feeds. “We just pulled the traffic cams near the South Side docks from this morning. Malcolm Croft had a private meeting with a chemist from Eastern Europe at 6:00 AM. Henderson’s Diner is two blocks from that warehouse. Chloe’s brother must have been doing an early supply run. She was there, Arthur. She must have overheard Croft discussing the aconite dose for the wedding chalice.”

“She walked through a monsoon,” Arthur said, the agony tearing at his throat. “Seven months pregnant. She walked across the South Side to save my life.”

The heavy steel doors of Trauma Suite One swung open.

Arthur straightened instantly, moving toward Dr. Vance with predatory speed. “Tell me.”

Gabriel pulled down his surgical mask, letting out a long, shuddering breath. “The bleeding was caused by a partial placental abruption brought on by extreme physical stress, dehydration, and acute shock.”

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. “Is my baby alive?”

Gabriel looked directly into the mob boss’s eyes. “We stabilized the tear. The baby’s heartbeat is rapid, but it’s strong. It’s a boy, Arthur.”

A boy.

A choked sound escaped Arthur’s throat. He closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against the cool steel doorframe as a wave of overwhelming emotion crashed over him. A son. Chloe was carrying his son.

“And Chloe?” Arthur demanded, his voice trembling.

“Her core temperature was dangerously low, and she is suffering from severe exhaustion and mild malnutrition,” Gabriel explained. “She’s running a slight fever from the rain, but she is out of immediate danger. We have her on IV fluids, magnesium, and bed rest. But Arthur... if she undergoes another shock like this, she could go into premature labor. At twenty-eight weeks, the baby's lungs aren't fully developed. She cannot leave this bed.”

“She won't have to,” Arthur vowed, his eyes hardening into twin chips of black obsidian. “Leo.”

“Boss?”

“Lock down this entire floor. Put twenty men on the perimeter with heavy rifles. No one enters without my biometric scan. If a single Croft soldier even looks at the street corner outside this building, put a bullet between their eyes.”

“Consider it done,” Leo nodded, turning sharply on his heel to execute the orders.

Arthur pushed through the doors of the private recovery room.

The room was dimly lit, the rhythmic, electronic beep... beep... beep of the fetal heart monitor filling the quiet space like a sacred chant. Chloe lay in the center of the massive hospital bed, swallowed by white sheets. An IV line was taped to the back of her bruised hand, and an oxygen cannula rested beneath her nose.

Arthur walked over on silent feet. He pulled a chair to the bedside, sat down, and reached out with a trembling hand, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead.

She looked so fragile against the clinical white pillows. He reached down, sliding his large hand under the sheet until his palm rested against the warm, prominent swell of her belly.

As if sensing his presence, a tiny, distinct kick pushed back against his palm.

Tears, hot and unfamiliar, pricked Arthur’s eyes. He bowed his head, resting his forehead against her stomach, whispering a silent vow into the darkened room.

“I am never letting you go again. I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone touch you.”
