Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Dark

When Arthur returned to the estate at midnight, the house was silent save for the crackling of the bedroom fire.
He stripped off his suit jacket, washed the gunpowder residue from his hands, and walked into the master suite on quiet feet.
Chloe was awake, propped up against a mountain of pillows, reading a worn paperback novel under the soft glow of the bedside lamp. When she heard the door click, she looked up, her eyes immediately scanning his body for wounds.
“You’re not bleeding,” she said, her voice soft in the quiet room.
“I promised you I wouldn't be,” Arthur said, walking over and sitting on the edge of the mattress.
The tension between them had softened, replaced by a heavy, fragile intimacy.
“It’s over?” she asked quietly.
“Malcolm Croft is dead. His syndicate has been dismantled. The bounty on your head has been wiped out, and the Commission has recognized our family as the sole authority in the city.”
Chloe looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the lace border of the blanket. “Our family.”
Arthur reached out, his large, warm fingers gently covering hers. “Chloe... I know you are terrified of this world. I know you never asked to be the queen of a criminal empire. But I swear to you on my mother’s grave, you and our son will never see the violence. I will build an iron wall between this family and the streets.”
Chloe looked up, her almond eyes searching his face.
“I wasn't terrified of your world, Arthur,” she whispered, tears glistening on her lashes. “I was terrified that you didn't love me. When you left, I thought... I thought you just used me because I was convenient. Because I was just a fat, clumsy diner girl who made you good coffee.”
Arthur’s heart clenched with such violent agony that he could barely speak.
He shifted onto the bed, gathering her into his arms, pulling her back against his broad chest. He wrapped his arms securely around her, his palms resting over the firm, beautiful curve of her pregnant belly.
“Listen to me,” Arthur growled softly against her ear, his voice trembling with fierce conviction. “You are the most breathtaking, magnificent woman I have ever laid eyes on. Every curve of your body is a masterpiece that I thank God for every single day. I didn't fall in love with a diner girl, Chloe. I fell in love with you. Your courage, your fire, your stubborn, beautiful heart.”
Chloe rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she felt like she had been holding for months. She covered his hands with hers, feeling their baby kick rhythmically against their joined fingers.
“He likes your voice,” Chloe murmured softly, a small, genuine smile finally touching her lips.
May you like
“He has good taste,” Arthur whispered, burying his face in her sweet, vanilla-scented curls.
That night, for the first time in seven weeks, Chloe Henderson slept without nightmares, cradled safely in the arms of the beast who had conquered a city just to bring her home.
