Chapter 9 - When the Hunter Becomes the Monster in the Rain

The museum's grand corridor turned into a warzone.

Sirens wailed in piercing, oscillating tones. Emergency strobes flashed red against the ancient marble statues. High-society guests were screaming, stampeding down the front stairs toward the street as Ashford security teams clashed violently with Caldwell’s mercenary force in the shadowed wings of the building.

Dominic moved like a phantom of death.

Every shot from his weapon found its mark. He didn't waste ammunition; he didn't hesitate. When a mercenary rounded the corner near the Roman antiquities hall, Dominic fired twice into the man's chest, stepped over the falling body, and stripped the tactical submachine gun from his hands, tossing it backward to Elena.

"You know how to use this?" Dominic shouted over the gunfire.

Elena caught the weapon. The cold steel felt heavy, but familiar. During her six months of hiding, she had spent hours at underground firing ranges learning the basics of survival.

"Safety off, pull the trigger, aim for center mass," she said, her voice steadying through the adrenaline surge.

"That's my girl," Dominic growled, a fierce pride flashing in his dark eyes.

They fought their way down the service stairwell toward the underground parking garage.

At the bottom of the stairs, the reinforced steel door burst open. Vincent Caldwell himself stood in the doorway, backed by four heavily armed bodyguards, holding a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol.

"Elena!" Caldwell snarled, his face twisted in psychotic fury. "You think this arrogant bastard can save you? You belong to me! I made you!"

"I never belonged to you, Vincent," Elena spat, stepping up beside Dominic with her weapon raised. "You're a pathetic monster who preys on the weak. But you picked the wrong woman."

"Kill them both!" Caldwell screamed to his men. "Blow them to pieces!"

Gunfire erupted in the concrete garage.

Dominic shoved Elena behind a heavy concrete support pillar, leaning out to fire a devastating volley of rounds. Two of Caldwell’s bodyguards collapsed instantly, blood pooling on the wet asphalt.

Marco appeared from the upper stairwell, firing down upon Caldwell’s rear flank.

Caldwell realized his ambush had failed catastrophically. He turned and sprinted toward a waiting black armored SUV idling near the garage exit.

"Dominic! He’s getting away!" Elena shouted.

Dominic didn't chase him on foot. He pulled a tactical remote detonator from his pocket—a failsafe his team had planted on every vehicle entering the VIP garage an hour before the gala.

Dominic pressed the black button.

BOOM!

The front axle of Caldwell's getaway SUV exploded in a blinding fireball, flipping the heavy vehicle onto its side and sending it skidding across the concrete floor in a shower of sparks.

Caldwell crawled out through the shattered windshield, coughing blood, his clothes torn and burning. He looked up just in time to see Dominic Ashford stepping through the smoke, towering over him like an angel of death.

Dominic raised his weapon, leveling the barrel directly between Caldwell’s eyes.

"This is for the North Yard warehouse," Dominic whispered.

Before Dominic could pull the trigger, a second mercenary vehicle roared into the garage, spraying suppressing fire and forcing Dominic to dive behind a concrete barrier.

Two surviving mercenaries grabbed the bleeding Caldwell, dragged him into the back of the pickup truck, and sped up the ramp into the stormy winter night, tires squealing in desperation.

Silence descended upon the smoke-filled garage.

Dominic rose from the ground, brushing dust from his ruined tuxedo jacket. He walked over to Elena, who was standing by the pillar, the submachine gun lowered, the master USB drive clutched tightly in her left hand.

Dominic reached out, taking the heavy weapon from her hands and tossing it aside. He pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest.

Elena buried her face in his neck, her hands gripping his shoulders. She was trembling, but not from fear. The adrenaline, the triumph, and the overwhelming realization that they had won the first decisive battle surged through her veins.

"We got it," she whispered against his skin. "Dominic... we got it."

May you like

Dominic buried his hand in her auburn hair, holding her so tightly she could feel the fierce, possessive pounding of his heart.

"You were incredible," he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Now, let's go home and end this war once and for all."
