Chapter 5 - The Ghost Who Remembered How to Breathe

The next forty-eight hours within the Ashford estate were a blur of intense preparation.

While Dominic met with his tactical commanders in the subterranean war room beneath the mansion, Laura worked tirelessly to ensure Elena’s physical stamina was up to the task. High-dose vitamin infusions, physical therapy for her bruised ribs, and advanced dermatological creams worked miracles on her battered skin.

By Saturday evening, the physical transformation was nothing short of breathtaking.

A team of high-end stylists, sworn to absolute secrecy under penalty of death by the Ashford Syndicate, arrived at the manor. They brought racks of couture gowns, diamond jewelry, and cosmetic kits.

When Elena stepped out of the dressing room, the entire suite fell silent.

She wore a custom-fitted, floor-length gown of midnight-black silk. The dress possessed an asymmetrical neckline that elegantly covered the healing bruises along her left collarbone while exposing the graceful line of her right shoulder and neck. The high-slit skirt revealed her long, toned legs, while the structured corset held her injured ribs securely in place without causing pain. Her auburn hair was styled into an intricate, cascading updo, with loose tendrils framing her high cheekbones.

Skillful makeup had completely erased the remaining traces of bruising. Her amber eyes, lined with subtle charcoal shadow, burned with fierce, regal intensity.

She was no longer the broken woman chained to a concrete pillar.

She was a goddess carved from obsidian and vengeance.

A knock sounded at the door, and Dominic stepped inside.

He wore a tailored bespoke tuxedo of midnight blue with black satin lapels, a crisp white shirt, and a black silk bow tie. He looked every inch the billionaire aristocrat—lethal, magnificent, and untouchable.

Dominic froze in his tracks.

For the first time since Elena had met him, the mafia kingpin lost his absolute composure. His dark eyes swept over her from head to toe, lingering on the curve of her waist, the elegance of her neck, and the defiant fire in her eyes. A heavy silence settled in the room, thick with unsaid words and sudden, overwhelming attraction.

"You look..." Dominic paused, clearing his throat slightly. "Magnificent."

Elena felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks, her heart fluttering in a way that had nothing to do with fear.

"Your stylists are miracle workers," she replied softly, smoothing the silk of her skirt. "I barely recognize the woman in the mirror."

"The dress is just fabric, Elena," Dominic said, walking toward her with slow, measured steps until he stood mere inches away. The scent of his cedarwood and amber cologne enveloped her senses. "The strength in your eyes? That belongs to you."

He reached into his pocket and produced a velvet jewelry box. Opening it, he revealed a breathtaking diamond choker featuring a pear-cut black diamond at its center.

"Turn around," he instructed softly.

Elena obeyed, lifting her hair. Dominic stepped closer, his chest grazing her back. She could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame. His fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of her neck as he fastened the cold platinum clasp. A delicious shiver ran down her spine.

"This black diamond contains an encrypted sub-frequency transponder," Dominic murmured against her ear, his warm breath sending goosebumps across her skin. "If we get separated for even ten seconds, Marco will have your exact coordinates down to the millimeter."

Elena turned back to face him, looking up into his dark, intense eyes.

"Do you really think Caldwell will be there?"

"I know he will," Dominic replied, his expression hardening into cold steel. "He sits on the board of trustees. He uses the museum galas to clean his money through art donations. He believes you are either dead or rotting in a cellar somewhere outside the city limits."

Dominic offered her his arm, his tattooed wrist peeking slightly past the white cuff of his shirt.

"Tonight, Miss Vance, we show him that the ghost he created has returned to drag him into hell."

Elena smiled—a sharp, dangerous, beautiful smile. She slipped her gloved hand into the crook of his arm, feeling the iron muscle beneath his tailored wool.

"Lead the way, Mr. Ashford."
