Chapter 8 - The Trap Beneath the Chandelier and Gunpowder

Dominic smoothly guided Elena off the dance floor, slipping behind a towering velvet curtain near the European Wing.
Marco was already waiting in the shadowed hallway, holding an encrypted keycard that bypassed the museum's electronic security grid.
"Camera loops are active for the next six minutes, Boss," Marco whispered. "Caldwell just slipped out the side exit with eight of his men. They're heading for the service elevators to cut us off."
"Let them come," Dominic replied coldly. "Elena, lead the way."
They moved swiftly down the quiet, dimly lit corridor of the conservation wing. The walls were lined with half-restored Renaissance masterpieces and climate-controlled display cases.
Elena stopped in front of a private restoration vault marked PRIVATE ARCHIVE: 18th CENTURY ITALIAN.
She placed her thumb against the biometric scanner beside the door. A soft green light blinked. She then typed a rapidly shifting six-digit numerical code on the keypad.
CLICK.
The heavy reinforced door swung open.
Inside, resting on an easel under a focused spotlight, was a massive oil painting depicting the Grand Canal of Venice at sunset.
Elena walked straight to the painting. Reaching behind the heavy gilded wooden frame, she felt for the small pressure release mechanism near the top right corner.
With a soft mechanical snap, a hidden compartment popped open.
Inside rested a sleek, obsidian-colored USB drive equipped with a biometric fingerprint scanner and a glowing blue LED indicator.
"This is it," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly as she pulled the drive from its hiding place. "Caldwell’s entire life. Every offshore account, every bribe, every murder contract, and the routing numbers to over eight hundred million dollars in laundered assets."
"Well done, Miss Vance," Dominic said, stepping up beside her.
Suddenly, the heavy glass skylight above the restoration vault shattered into a thousand raining shards.
CRASH!
Two armed men in tactical gear rappelled down through the broken ceiling, assault rifles raised.
"Drop the drive!" one of the gunmen screamed.
Dominic reacted with blinding, terrifying speed.
He shoved Elena behind a heavy marble pedestal, drew his custom suppressed pistol from inside his tuxedo jacket, and fired three rapid shots before the first gunman could even align his sights.
The bullets tore through the man's chest. He dropped like a stone.
The second gunman fired a burst of automatic rounds, chipping chunks of marble from the pedestal shielding Elena.
Marco lunged from the doorway, tackling the second mercenary into a display table, smashing wooden easels and sending oil paints flying. Marco drove a tactical combat knife beneath the man's ribcage, neutralizing him instantly.
From the hallway outside, the sound of heavy combat boots echoed rapidly.
"We have more incoming!" Marco shouted, reloading his weapon. "Caldwell’s main hit squad just breached the service doors!"
Dominic pulled Elena up from behind the pedestal, his hand gripping hers tightly.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his eyes scanning her face.
"No! I have the drive!" she yelled over the blaring sound of the museum's emergency alarms.

"Stay behind me and keep your head down," Dominic ordered, his eyes blazing with absolute lethality.
He racked the slide of his pistol, stepped out into the hallway, and unleashed hell upon the men who had come to take her back.
