Chapter 7 - A Dance with the Executioner in a Dress of Black Silk

The Metropolitan Museum of Art gleamed like a palace of glass and limestone amidst the winter snow.

Limousines and exotic sports cars lined Fifth Avenue. Flashes from paparazzi cameras illuminated the grand staircase as city council members, foreign dignitaries, billionaire tech moguls, and elite socialites ascended into the Great Hall.

A sleek, armored Maybach pulled up to the red carpet.

Felix opened the door, and Dominic Ashford stepped out. The crowd of photographers gasped, cameras flashing in a frantic, blinding strobe. Dominic rarely attended public social events; his presence alone was a massive front-page headline.

Then, Dominic turned and extended his hand into the vehicle.

Elena Vance placed her gloved hand in his and stepped out onto the red carpet.

A collective murmur rippled through the gathered press.

"Is that Elena Vance?"

"The missing accountant from the Federal Reserve?"

"Who is she with? Dominic Ashford?!"

Elena kept her chin held high, her expression regal and untouchable. The flashbulbs were disorienting, but the solid, warm presence of Dominic beside her anchored her nerves. He placed his hand lightly at the small of her back, guiding her up the grand staircase with calm, sovereign authority.

"Breathe, Elena," Dominic whispered as they entered the grand arched foyer beneath the towering stone pillars. "You are the queen of this room tonight. Let them look."

The Great Hall was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, string quartets, and glittering designer gowns. Hundreds of elite guests mingled beneath the towering Roman statues.

As Dominic and Elena walked across the marble floor, conversations died.

The socialites parted like the Red Sea. Whispers followed them like a trailing shadow.

And then, across the crowded ballroom near the VIP mezzanine, Elena saw him.

Vincent Caldwell.

He stood holding a glass of vintage champagne, surrounded by two corrupt city judges and his chief security enforcer. Caldwell was a man in his early fifties, with slicked-back silver hair, cold predatory blue eyes, and a sharp, cruel face that had haunted Elena’s nightmares for six months.

Caldwell casually turned his head toward the entrance—and froze.

The champagne glass in his hand slipped through his fingers.

It shattered against the marble floor with a sharp CRASH, splashing golden liquid and crystal shards across the polished stone.

Caldwell’s face drained of all color. His jaw dropped, his eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated shock.

He stared at Elena as if a corpse had just crawled out of an open grave, donned a couture silk gown, and walked into a high-society ballroom.

Elena felt a sudden rush of adrenaline surging through her veins. The terror that had paralyzed her for months evaporated, replaced by a cold, intoxicating sense of triumph.

She looked Caldwell dead in the eyes—and offered him a slow, mocking smile.

Dominic leaned down, his lips brushing Elena’s ear as he caught Caldwell’s murderous gaze across the room.

"Look at him, Elena," Dominic murmured, a dark, velvet chuckle vibrating in his chest. "He is looking at his executioner."

Caldwell took a step forward, his hands clenching into fists, but his chief enforcer caught his arm, frantically whispering in his ear, pointing out the twelve armed Ashford operatives positioned subtly around the perimeter of the ballroom.

"Shall we dance?" Dominic asked, offering his hand to Elena in the center of the ballroom floor.

"In front of him?" Elena asked, her amber eyes sparkling with dangerous excitement.

"Especially in front of him."

Dominic pulled her into his arms as the string quartet swelled into a dramatic, sweeping waltz.

Elena placed one hand on his broad shoulder, her other hand clasped in his. Dominic moved with shocking grace and power, guiding her through the steps with absolute precision. Their bodies moved in perfect synchronization, the black silk of her dress swirling around his tailored trousers.

As they spun across the floor, Elena looked up into Dominic’s dark eyes.

The proximity was intoxicating. His hand at her waist was firm and possessive, holding her close enough that she could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. For a moment, the ballroom, the crowd, the chandeliers, and even Caldwell vanished.

There was only Dominic.

"You're doing incredible," Dominic murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes.

"I had a good teacher," she breathed.

"Now," Dominic whispered, spinning her toward the shadowed corridor leading to the museum’s private art restoration wing. "It's time to collect our prize."
