Chapter 6 - Smoke, Steel, and the First Warning at the Pier

Before the gala, Dominic had business that required immediate, violent closure.
While Elena remained guarded by twenty elite soldiers in the heavily fortified penthouse suite of the Ashford Tower downtown, Dominic and Marco traveled to the South Boston commercial docks under the cover of a freezing fog.
The smell of salt water, diesel exhaust, and rotten fish hung heavy in the air.
At Pier 42, two of Caldwell’s primary cargo freighters were unloading contraband—unmarked crates of heavy automatic weapons and military-grade explosives destined for rival gangs across the Northeast.
Dominic stood on the roof of a nearby warehouse, looking through night-vision binoculars.
"How many men on the perimeter?" Dominic asked, his voice low and devoid of emotion.
"Fourteen," Marco replied, checking the suppressor on his submachine gun. "All Caldwell loyalists. The dockmaster has been paid off. The local police precinct received an anonymous tip about a false alarm three miles north to keep them away."
"Good," Dominic said, lowering the binoculars. "Leave no crates intact. Take the manifests. And make sure the captain carries a message back to his master."
"And the guards?"
Dominic's eyes flashed with lethal coldness. "Anyone holding a weapon dies."
Five minutes later, Pier 42 erupted into chaos.
Dominic’s tactical strike team moved with terrifying, silent efficiency. Suppressed gunshots cracked through the fog like breaking twigs. One by one, Caldwell’s sentries dropped into the icy water or crumpled onto the wooden planks.
Dominic walked down the central gangway, an automatic shotgun resting casually in his right hand. A Caldwell lieutenant burst from behind a shipping container, raising an AK-47.
Dominic didn't even flinch. He raised his weapon and fired a single, devastating blast. The concussive force hurled the man backward against the metal hull of the freighter, dead before he hit the deck.
Within eight minutes, the entire pier was secured.
Dominic climbed the gangway into the ship's bridge. The freighter's captain was on his knees, trembling violently with Marco’s pistol pressed against the base of his skull.
Dominic approached the captain, kneeling down just as he had done with Elena in the warehouse—except this time, there was no mercy in his eyes.
He tossed a heavy gold coin onto the deck in front of the terrified captain. Stamped into the gold was the crest of the Ashford wolf.
"Tell Vincent Caldwell that Pier 42 now belongs to the Ashford Syndicate," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet whisper. "Tell him that every ship, every dollar, and every breath he takes in this city is subject to my tax."
The captain nodded frantically, tears streaming down his face. "I'll tell him! I swear to God, I'll tell him!"
Dominic stood up and turned to Marco. "Set the thermite charges on the weapon crates. Blow the cargo into the harbor. We have a gala to attend."
As Dominic walked down the pier, a massive series of muffled underwater explosions ripped through the freighter's lower hull, sending plumes of black smoke and fire into the night sky.

The message had been sent.
The war was no longer in the shadows. It was out in the open.
