Chapter 9 - The Roof Above The Abyss

Rain had begun to fall in heavy, freezing sheets, slickening the hundred-year-old slate tiles of the roof.

I pulled myself through the narrow dormer window onto the rain-lashed roofline. The wind screamed through the surrounding pine forest, whipping my soaked shirt against my skin.

At the edge of the roof, twenty-five feet above the jagged stone patio below, stood Sarah.

She was clutching the brick chimney with one hand, barely able to stand, her hospital gown soaked and plastered to her shivering frame.

Standing three feet in front of her, holding a bloodstained hunting knife, was Julian. He had climbed the fire escape from the courtyard, his face blistered and raw from the scalding steam.

"Look at us, Ryan!" Julian screamed over the roar of the thunder. "The perfect family reunion! One brother who forgot everything, one brother who took everything, and the woman who ruined us both!"

"Julian, let her go!" I shouted, raising the shotgun and centering the bead on his chest. "It's over! The police are five minutes away! The scanner ping alerted the state troopers!"

"The troopers work for our uncle's payroll, you idiot!" Julian laughed maniacally, rain streaming into his burnt eyes. "Nobody is coming to save you! Give me the drive, or I take Sarah over the ledge with me right now!"

"Ryan..." Sarah choked out, her silver-gray eyes finding mine through the storm. "Don't give him anything. Protect Maya. Tell her... tell her I loved her every single second."

"No!" I roared. "Sarah, hold on!"

Julian lunged forward with the knife.

I pulled the trigger.
