Chapter 14 - The Forgotten Memories Return

That evening, as the sun dipped below the pine-covered hills, casting a golden-orange glow across the valley, I sat on the front porch with a sketchbook in my lap.
Sarah sat down beside me on the wooden bench, handing me an old leather-bound photo album she had recovered from our grandfather's safe deposit box.
I opened the first page.
There was a photograph of Sarah and me at twenty-one, standing on the rocky shores of Lake Sebago, laughing as the waves splashed our bare feet.
And suddenly, like a dam bursting inside a darkened canyon, the memories flooded back.
I remembered the sound of Sarah’s laugh on that summer afternoon.
I remembered the exact hospital room where Maya was born, the smell of the winter rain outside the window, and the way I had cried when I first held her tiny hand in mine.
I remembered the love I had for Sarah, and how that love had transformed through time, sacrifice, and survival into a deep, unbreakable kinship.
And I looked through the front window into our warm, glowing living room, where Caroline was tucking both Lily and Maya beneath a heavy quilt on the couch, reading them a bedtime story.
