Chapter 12 - Blood And Truth In The Hospital Ward

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of sterile hospital corridors, legal depositions, and emotional reunions.
Sarah was admitted to the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital under federal protective custody. With the Mercer Syndicate completely dismantled following the seizure of the encrypted drive, the best medical specialists in the country were brought in.
Her kidney failure had been severe, but it was treatable.
On the third day, the lead physician walked into Sarah’s private room where Caroline, Lily, Maya, and I were sitting together around the bed.
"We have the tissue typing results back for the transplant list," the doctor said, looking over his clipboard with a warm smile. "We found a perfect nine-out-of-ten antigen match."
"Who?" Sarah asked weakly.
The doctor looked at me. "Ryan. It’s an almost identical match. You can donate the kidney as soon as the legal clearance is finalized tomorrow morning."
Maya looked up at me from her coloring book on the bedside table. "Daddy is going to fix Mommy?"
"Daddy is going to fix everything, Maya," I said, kissing the top of her head.

Lily crawled onto my lap and took Maya’s hand in hers. "We're going to share my bedroom for real now, right Daddy? Without the wall?"
"Without the wall, baby," I promised. "We're tearing the wall down."
