Chapter 8 - The Shadow In The Smoke

The second floor was thick with white mist and the smell of sulfur from the burst radiator line.
I moved silently along the baseboards, using the knowledge of every squeaking floorboard to mask my approach. Two men in tactical gear emerged from the main staircase, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the hallway with green laser sights.
"Clear left," one whispered.
"Julian fell down the shaft into the boiler room," the other said into a shoulder radio. "Target is mobile with the women. Find them."
I didn't wait for them to turn around.
I stepped out from behind the linen closet door and swung the heavy steel crowbar with the full momentum of my body. It connected with the side of the first gunman’s helmet with a sickening crack, sending him sprawling unconscious against the wall.
The second man spun, raising his rifle, but the tight confines of the Victorian corridor worked against his long barrel. I drove the blunt end of the crowbar into his solar plexus, knocking the breath from his lungs, followed by an upward strike to his jaw. He collapsed to the Persian runner rug, dropping his weapon.
I picked up the tactical shotgun slung across his chest, checked the chamber—twelve-gauge buckshot—and kicked their radios into the broken heating vent.
I sprinted back into the nursery crawlspace.
The vault door was still open, but the room was empty.

Sarah was gone.
A trail of fresh blood led away from the pallet bed, through the narrow attic gable, and out onto the steep slate roof of the third-story dormer.
