Chapter 13 - The Rebirth Of The Mercer Estate

Six months later.
The sound of hammers and laughter echoed through the sunlit hallways of our Victorian home.
The dark crawlspaces, the narrow vents, and the reinforced iron storm doors were completely gone. In their place was a magnificent, open-concept sunroom that opened directly into a sprawling backyard garden filled with blooming hydrangeas and apple trees.
The federal courts had officially cleared our family of all criminal ties. Sarah walked through the French doors into the garden, her color restored, her cheeks rosy and full of life. She wore a bright floral sundress, carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade.
"Lunch is ready, girls!" Sarah called out toward the wooden swing set.
Lily and Maya—both wearing matching denim overalls and braided hair—came racing across the green grass, giggling uncontrollably as they chased our new golden retriever puppy.
"I won!" Maya cheered, sliding onto the wooden deck.
"Nuh-uh! It was a tie!" Lily laughed, throwing her arms around Maya’s neck.

Caroline walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on an apron. She wrapped one arm around Sarah’s waist and rested her head on her twin sister’s shoulder.
They looked at each other with an understanding that only two sisters who had walked through hell could ever share.
