Chapter 8 - THE BIRTHDAY TEST

Elsie’s birthday party had been designed by Helena.

That was normal.

She loved parties.

Princess theme.

Small orchestra.

Pink-and-gold table.

Children’s buffet.

Then the schedule.

12:00 arrival.

12:20 photographs.

12:45 games.

1:15 lunch.

1:40 cake.

2:00 quiet room.

Why was “quiet room” written only on the first planning draft?

Later versions removed it.

The speech therapist had recommended exactly that break because three hours of noise would overwhelm Elsie.

Helena crossed it out.

Handwritten:

NO SPECIAL ROUTINE. NATURAL BEHAVIOR.

Natural.

Then food.

The children’s buffet opened at 1:10.

Elsie’s usual snack time was 12:45.

Helena deliberately moved it.

Why?

“To see whether she could wait.”

Then headphones.

The nanny packed them.

Helena removed them from the party bag.

Weighted blanket?

Moved upstairs.

Favorite crackers?

Not served.

Every support stripped away.

Then Marcus.

He knew.

Not every detail.

Enough.

His messages:

Marcus:

This is too much for her.

Helena:

Monday decides everything.

Marcus:

She’ll melt down.

Helena:

Then she has to learn not to.

Marcus:

Dad will be there.

Helena:

Keep him in VIP until lunch.

I read that line three times.

My own sister had arranged the party flow so I would spend the first hour greeting senior guests away from the children’s table.

Nothing sinister at the time.

VIP hosting.

Family elders.

Old business friends.

She knew exactly how duty moved me around a room.

Then the final instruction:

Helena:

If Elsie reaches early, do not interfere. I handle it.

Marcus:

No hitting.

Helena:

Obviously.

May you like

Obviously.

Then she slapped her.
