Chapter 20 - MARCUS REPAYS MORE THAN MONEY

The trust was repaid financially.
That did not repair fatherhood.
Marcus did something harder.
He stopped defending himself to Elsie.
At six, she asked:
“Why you let Grandma scary?”
He knelt.
No:
I was grieving.
No:
Grandma fooled me.
No:
I didn’t know she would slap you.
He said:
“Because I listened to Grandma instead of listening to you.”
Elsie stared.
Then:
“Bad choice.”
“Yes.”
“Do again?”
“No.”
“How know?”
“I have to keep showing you.”
That was the right answer.
