Chapter 7 - The Matriarch's UltimatumIf Eleanor Mercer thought a piece of paper was going to make me pack my bags and run, she severely miscalculated the man she was dealing with.

By 6:00 AM the next morning, I had transformed my home office into a war room. I didn't bother calling a standard real estate attorney; they would be completely useless against the billion-dollar legal armada of Mercer Global Holdings. Instead, I called Sarah Sterling—the brilliant, ruthless bulldog of a lawyer who had helped me orchestrate the trap that sent Vanessa to prison.

Sarah flew in from New York on a private charter and was sitting across from my desk by noon, nursing a double espresso and reviewing the forged loan documents.

"It's a masterpiece of financial fraud," Sarah admitted grimly, adjusting her glasses. "Vanessa used your IP address, replicated your digital signatures, and utilized Colin’s internal legal credentials to bypass the standard bank notarization protocols. On paper, it looks like you willingly mortgaged this house to fund a phantom tech startup. Eleanor bought the debt the second it defaulted."

"Can we prove it was forged?" I asked, pacing the length of the office.

"Eventually? Yes. We can subpoena the digital forensics," Sarah replied. "But Eleanor isn't playing the long game. She filed this in a specific federal district in California where she clearly owns the judge. The foreclosure is expedited. She can legally freeze your liquid assets and seize this property before we even get a hearing to contest the signature."

"She wants to render me homeless and bankrupt so I can't afford to fight her," I deduced, staring out the window at the crashing waves. "She wants Nora and me on the street."

"Exactly," Sarah said.

Before we could strategize further, the heavy iron gates at the front of the property buzzed again. This time, it wasn't a courier.

A fleet of three black Mercedes sedans pulled into the driveway.

"Speak of the devil," I muttered.

I didn't wait for them to knock. I unlocked the front door and stepped out onto the sprawling terracotta porch, Sarah flanking me.

The doors of the lead Mercedes opened, and a team of private security contractors stepped out, forming a perimeter. Then, the rear door of the center car opened.

Eleanor Mercer stepped onto my property.

She was in her late sixties, but she possessed the terrifying, perfectly preserved posture of a woman who had never been told 'no' in her entire life. She wore a tailored white Chanel suit, a silk scarf, and oversized sunglasses. She surveyed my home with a look of absolute, unapologetic disgust.

"Mr. Sterling," Eleanor said, walking up the steps, her high heels clicking sharply against the stone. She removed her sunglasses, revealing eyes as cold and gray as a winter storm. "I see you haven't started packing."

"You are trespassing on private property, Eleanor," I said, my voice echoing with an absolute, uncompromising authority. "Get back in your car before I have you arrested."

Eleanor laughed. It was a dismissive, aristocratic sound. She gestured to the two corporate lawyers standing behind her.

"I am standing on property owned by Mercer Global," she corrected smoothly. "I came to offer you a simple choice, David. I know you have hidden capital. I know you restructured your trust before you ambushed my son. Give me the remaining seven million dollars in your blind trust, and sign a non-disclosure agreement absolving Colin of all civil liability. Do that, and I will tear up the foreclosure notice. You keep the beach house."

I stared at her. She wasn't just trying to bankrupt me; she was trying to buy her son's redemption and silence me permanently.

"You want me to pay you to keep my own house, while your son sits in a federal cage for trying to drug a child?" I asked, a dark, terrifying smile spreading across my face.

"My son made a strategic error by trusting that cheap, social-climbing whore you married," Eleanor spat, her facade cracking for a fraction of a second to reveal the venom underneath. "But he is a Mercer. And I will not allow his legacy to be destroyed by a grieving, middle-class widower. You have twenty-four hours to transfer the funds, David. If you don't, I will take this house. Then, I will petition the family court to have your daughter removed from your custody, citing your impending homelessness and ‘financial instability’."

The air in my lungs turned to ice. She had crossed the line. She had threatened Nora.

I stepped forward, closing the distance between us until I was inches from her face. Her security guards tensed, but I didn't care.

"Listen to me very carefully, Eleanor," I whispered, my voice vibrating with a lethal intensity that made the billionaire matriarch subtly step back. "You think your money makes you untouchable. You think you can walk into my life and bully me because you own a few judges. But you forgot one very important thing."

I tilted my head, my eyes completely dead.

"I already destroyed the two people who thought they were smarter than me. I didn't do it with money. I did it by exposing them to the light," I said softly. "If you try to take my home, or if you even breathe in the direction of my daughter... I won't just fight your lawyers. I will dig up every dirty, blood-soaked secret the Mercer family has ever buried, and I will burn your entire dynasty to the ground."

Eleanor stared at me, genuine shock registering in her cold eyes. No one had ever spoken to her like that.

"You are a fool," she hissed. "Enjoy your last night by the ocean."

She turned and marched back to her Mercedes. The fleet of cars reversed out of the driveway, leaving me standing in the sun.

"David," Sarah said quietly from the porch. "She’s going to execute the seizure tomorrow."

"Let her try," I replied, turning back to my lawyer. "Call Elias. We’re going on the offensive."
