Chapter 2 - The Silent House

Caleb parked two blocks away.

We walked through the alley behind my property.

I used my physical key to unlock the back patio door.

Vanessa hadn't engaged the deadbolt.

She thought I was thirty thousand feet in the air.

I stepped into the hallway.

Caleb was right behind me, his hand resting near his concealed weapon.

Voices drifted from the kitchen.

Colin was already there.

He hadn't wasted a single minute.

"The paperwork is ready," Colin was saying. "Once she acts out today, you record it, and I'll call him tomorrow about the residential facility."

"He'll sign," Vanessa said smoothly. "He's exhausted. He just wants her to be okay."

My blood turned to ice.
