Chapter 17 - The Judas ProtocolWhen a corrupt government declares war on you, you do not hire lawyers. You hire soldiers.

By 3:00 AM, the top floor of Nora’s Shield had been transformed from a legal advocacy firm into a militarized bunker. The panoramic windows were electronically tinted black. Elias and his team of ex-military cyber-warfare specialists were tracing every digital footprint connected to Senator Thorne.

I sat at the head of the glass conference table, my suit jacket discarded, rolling up my sleeves.

"He wasn't bluffing, David," Sarah said, rushing into the room with a stack of urgent legal notices. Her face was pale. "At exactly midnight, a federal magistrate in D.C. signed a blanket freeze on all of our domestic operating accounts. The IRS has just announced an emergency audit of the foundation. Thorne is choking our cash flow to death."

"What about the Coronado estate?" I demanded, my heart hammering a furious rhythm against my ribs.

"Title frozen under eminent domain clauses pending investigation," Sarah swallowed hard. "David... they can send federal marshals to evict you and Nora by tomorrow afternoon."

The sheer, blinding audacity of it made my vision tunnel. I had fought off corrupt stepmothers, rogue psychiatrists, and Russian cartel bosses. But this was the United States government being wielded as a personal assassination weapon by a single, power-hungry politician.

"Elias," I barked, turning to my security chief. "Get Nora. Wake her up, pack a bag, and move her to the Alpha site in the mountains. I want six heavily armed operatives with her at all times. Nobody gets within a mile of my daughter."

"Already done," Elias grunted, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "She’s in the armored SUV heading north as we speak. But boss... we have a bigger problem. Look at this."

Elias threw a heavily encrypted financial schematic onto the massive smart-board.

"Thorne is powerful, but he doesn't have the independent wealth to bribe federal judges in the middle of the night," Elias explained, highlighting a web of offshore shell companies. "He’s being funded by a super PAC called the Aegis Group. It’s a consortium of private military contractors and old-money billionaires. They are the ones pulling the strings at the DOJ. And guess who sits on the board of directors for Aegis?"

Elias tapped the screen, bringing up a photograph.

My breath caught in my throat. It was Eleanor Mercer.

"She didn't die in Victorville," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"No," Sarah said, reading from a newly decrypted file. "Three months ago, Thorne arranged for Eleanor’s compassionate release due to 'failing health.' She’s been under house arrest in a luxury compound in Virginia. She traded her cartel connections for Thorne’s political protection. This whole thing... it’s revenge, David. Eleanor bought a Senator to finish what her son started."

The room went dead silent.

I stood up, walking slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the pitch-black Los Angeles night. They thought they had cornered me. They thought freezing my money and threatening my home would make me surrender the Vanguard keys.

They had made a catastrophic miscalculation.

"They want to play with federal authority," I said softly, a dark, apocalyptic smile breaking across my face. "Sarah, draft a press release. Announce that I am stepping down as CEO of the foundation immediately, effective tonight."

"What?! David, you can't!" Sarah gasped. "If you step down, you lose the corporate shield!"

"I don't need a corporate shield, Sarah. I need freedom of movement," I turned back to the room, my eyes burning with lethal, unyielding fire. "If I am a civilian, they can't use the foundation's assets to blackmail me. Elias, access the offshore crypto-tumblers. Pull out fifty million in untraceable funds."

"Where are we going, boss?" Elias asked, a predatory grin matching my own.

"We are going to Washington, D.C.," I declared. "Senator Thorne thinks he is a predator. Let’s go show him what a real monster looks like."
