Chapter 14 - The TransferThe dynamic in the room had shifted violently. I was standing in the center of a heavily armed cartel fortress, surrounded by killers, and I was the one holding the leash.

Victor Kael paced the length of the stateroom, his massive hands clenched into fists. He glared at the flashing red light on my smartwatch.

"What do you want, Sterling?" Kael hissed, the polished arrogance completely gone.

"I want absolute immunity for me, my daughter, and my foundation," I dictated, keeping my voice perfectly level. "And I want the 1.2 billion dollars."

Kael stopped pacing, looking at me as if I had grown a second head. "You want the money? The FBI froze those accounts. You can't touch it without triggering a federal audit."

"I am a lawyer, Victor. I know how to bypass federal audits," I lied smoothly. "I have the backdoor encryption keys on this drive. If we plug this into your secure, untraceable satellite network right now, I can initiate a ghost transfer. I will route the 1.2 billion out of the DOJ’s frozen accounts and into a decentralized cryptocurrency tumbler. Once it’s washed, I keep five hundred million for my trouble. I transfer the remaining seven hundred million to your personal accounts. You get to go back to your bosses with the majority of their capital, and you get to live."

Kael’s eyes narrowed, weighing the options. The greed and the desperation were a potent combination. He needed the money to survive the wrath of his superiors.

"If you double-cross me, my men will cut you to pieces before your heart even stops," Kael warned, gesturing to a sleek, military-grade computer terminal on his desk. "Do it."

I walked over to the terminal, Elias standing silently a few feet away, his eyes scanning the guards. I inserted the titanium flash drive into the port. The screen flickered to life, displaying a complex, command-line interface.

I typed rapidly, my fingers flying across the keyboard. I wasn't accessing the DOJ’s frozen accounts. The 1.2 billion was permanently gone; Eleanor had lost it forever. But I didn't need the FBI's money. I needed Kael’s.

"The routing protocols are initializing," I said aloud, playing the part. I brought up a fake progress bar on the screen, designed by Elias hours before we boarded.

Kael leaned over my shoulder, watching the screen intently. "Where are you routing my cut?"

"To the primary Cayman Island holding account you registered under the Vanguard shell company," I replied.

"Good," Kael grunted.

But beneath the fake progress bar, my keystrokes were doing something entirely different. I had deployed a highly aggressive, localized malware payload from the flash drive directly into the superyacht’s internal network.

The payload was designed to do two things. First, it hijacked the yacht’s communication arrays, downloading the entirety of Kael’s private banking ledgers and internal security footage. Second, it initiated a catastrophic, automated wire transfer of Kael’s own liquid funds—every dime the casino had made in the last decade—and routed it directly into an irrevocable, anonymous global humanitarian trust managed by the United Nations.

"Transfer at ninety percent," I announced, my heart pounding a furious rhythm against my ribs.

"Get ready to drop the dead-man switch, Sterling," Kael warned, resting his hand on his holstered weapon.

"Transfer complete," I said, hitting the 'Enter' key with a definitive strike.

The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

But instead of a confirmation receipt, the terminal began to blare a deafening, high-pitched alarm. The lights in the stateroom snapped from a warm yellow to a harsh, flashing red.

"What did you do?!" Kael roared, grabbing me by the shoulder and spinning me around.

"I didn't steal the FBI's money, Victor," I smiled, a dark, victorious smirk spreading across my face. "I stole yours."

Kael looked at his personal tablet on the desk. The numbers in his primary accounts were rapidly spinning backward. Fifty million. Ten million. Zero.

"You bankrupt me!" Kael screamed, pulling his gun and aiming it directly at my face.

Before he could pull the trigger, the explosive charges Elias had secretly planted on the yacht’s main power generators during our boarding inspection detonated.

The entire ship violently shuddered. A massive, concussive boom echoed from the lower decks, plunging the superyacht into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

"Elias, now!" I shouted.

Elias moved like a ghost in the dark. He disarmed the guard nearest to him in a blur of motion, using the mercenary’s own rifle to lay down a burst of suppressive fire. The chaotic muzzle flashes illuminated the room in strobe-like bursts.

I dove behind the heavy oak desk just as Kael fired blindly into the dark, his bullets shattering the floor-to-ceiling windows behind me.

"Move! To the deck!" Elias yelled, grabbing my arm and hauling me toward the shattered glass.

We threw ourselves out of the broken window, plummeting thirty feet down into the freezing, pitch-black waters of the Atlantic Ocean as the superyacht erupted into flames above us.
