Chapter 5 - The Beach House

Colin tried to run for the patio door.

An officer slammed him against the refrigerator and cuffed him instantly.

"Vanessa Mercer," the detective said. "You are under arrest for child endangerment, extortion, and conspiracy to commit fraud."

Vanessa began to sob.

"It was his idea!" she screamed, pointing at Colin. "He made me do it!"

I covered Nora's ears so she wouldn't hear the pathetic sound of her abuser begging.

As they dragged Vanessa past me in handcuffs, she looked at me one last time.

"Please," she whispered.

I looked right through her.

"Enjoy your new residential facility," I told her.

Six months later.

Vanessa and Colin were sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison.

I filed for divorce the day she was arrested.

Nora and I didn't stay in that house.

We packed our things and moved permanently to the beachfront property in Coronado.

Grace's legacy.

I stood on the back deck, watching the Pacific Ocean crash against the shore.

Nora was running along the wet sand, chasing a seagull, laughing at the top of her lungs.

No shaking hands. No panic.

Just a six-year-old girl who was finally safe.

She ran back up the wooden stairs and handed me a perfect, unbroken seashell.

I held it tightly.

She had saved both of our lives with a single whisper.

And I would spend the rest of my life making sure her voice was the only one that mattered.
