Chapter 3 - The Golden Key That Turned Cold In Teresa’s Greedy Hands

While Alejandro was experiencing his humiliating corporate downfall on the streets of downtown Mexico City, Teresa was having the morning of her life.
Dressed in an expensive peach-colored linen suit that she had bought with Alejandro’s supplementary corporate credit card, Teresa had invited three of her wealthiest, most gossiping socialite acquaintances from her local church committee over for a private 'high-society brunch' at the Lomas de Chapultepec mansion.
“Oh, Carmen, you simply must see the imported marble in the solarium,” Teresa bragged loudly as she stepped out of a private taxi in the gated driveway, holding a basket of organic pastries. “Alejandro works so hard to give me the lifestyle I deserve. I told him just yesterday that his useless wife has zero taste, so I’m taking over the entire estate management!”
Her friends gasped with envy, looking up at the sprawling three-story glass-and-steel architectural masterpiece surrounded by lush palms and manicured boxwood hedges.
“You’re so blessed, Teresa,” Carmen purred, adjusting her sunglasses. “To have such a devoted, wealthy son who buys you a palace in Lomas!”
“It’s all about raising them with traditional values,” Teresa preened, puffing out her chest. “A real man provides for his mother first!”
Teresa marched up the wide travertine steps toward the towering solid-oak front doors with custom brass lion-head handles.
She reached into her designer purse, pulled out her shiny gold master key, and slid it into the heavy deadbolt lock.
She twisted the key to the right.
Clack.
It didn't turn.
Teresa frowned. She wiggled the key, pushed it in deeper, and tried twisting it to the left with force.
Nothing. The key was completely jammed.
“What is wrong with this cheap lock?” Teresa muttered under her breath, rattling the heavy brass handle.
She pulled the key out, inspected it, and tried again, using both hands to force the cylinder. The brass key groaned under the pressure and snapped in half with a sharp snap, leaving the broken blade stuck inside the keyhole.
“What in God’s name?!” Teresa shrieked, kicking the bottom of the solid-oak door with her shoe.
Before she could strike the wood a second time, the heavy door swung open from the inside.
Standing in the entryway were not the housekeepers, but two burly locksmiths wearing tactical tool belts, packing up specialized electronic drill kits, and flanked by three uniformed private security guards.
Standing right behind them, holding a clipboard and a cup of black coffee, was Carlos Mendoza, my private estate manager.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Teresa demanded, pushing her way toward the threshold with her finger pointed in the air. “Who authorized you people to touch the locks on my son’s house?! Get out of the way, I have guests!”
Carlos looked down at Teresa through his wire-rimmed glasses with cold, bureaucratic detachment.
“Good afternoon, Mrs. Gomez,” Carlos said smoothly. “As of 12:00 p.m. today, all exterior, interior, and subterranean security cylinders across the entire perimeter of this private property have been replaced with biometric and encrypted digital deadbolts.”
Teresa scoffed loudly, turning to her friends with an embarrassed, furious laugh. “Biometric? Alejandro must have installed an upgrade without telling me! Stand aside, young man, I am Teresa Gomez! I live here!”
Carlos looked down at his clipboard, flipping to an official land deed registry document bearing the golden seal of the Federal District Property Registry.
“According to the official title deed, property tax registry, and municipal utility contracts, there is only one legal owner of this estate: Madam Mariana Hart,” Carlos read aloud, ensuring every word resonated clearly across the courtyard for her socialite friends to hear.
“Furthermore,” Carlos continued, pulling out a laminated legal document, “Madam Hart has formally revoked all guest privileges and issued a permanent, non-negotiable Private Property Trespass Notice against Mrs. Teresa Gomez.”
Teresa’s jaw dropped so wide her faux-pearl earrings shook. “You lie! Alejandro bought this house with his own blood and sweat! Mariana is just his wife!”
“Madam Hart purchased this property in 2018, three full years before she ever met Mr. Alejandro Gomez,” Carlos replied with razor-sharp precision. “Mr. Gomez’s name does not appear on any deed, mortgage, or municipal registration associated with this residence.”
Carlos stepped back and nodded to the security team.
Two armed guards stepped onto the portico, crossing their arms and blocking the entire entrance.
“Mrs. Gomez, you have five minutes to leave the private driveway before the municipal police are dispatched to arrest you for criminal trespassing,” the lead guard stated in a low, booming voice.
Carmen and the other two church friends took three rapid steps backward down the travertine stairs, whispering furiously among themselves behind their manicured hands.
“Teresa... you told us this was Alejandro’s mansion,” Carmen whispered, her voice dripping with venomous mockery. “You said his wife was just a penniless secretary living on his charity!”
“It is his!” Teresa screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill, hysterical screech as her face burned scarlet with unbearable humiliation. “Alejandro! Where is Alejandro?! He will fire all of you! He will have you thrown in prison!”

Right at that moment, an old, yellow street cab with a sputtering exhaust pipe pulled up to the security gates.
Alejandro stepped out of the back seat, holding two battered cardboard boxes under his arms, looking like a defeated stray dog.
