Chapter 5 - The Sister-in-Law's Secret Ledger

At 7:30 PM, while Mia was sleeping soundly in a monitored pediatric bed under police guard, the ER door opened, and Cassandra Vance walked in. Jackson’s sister was trembling, clutching a battered leather-bound notebook against her chest.

When Jackson saw her, he jumped up. “Cassandra! Where is Mom? Did she call you again?”

Cassandra looked at Jackson with a look of pure disgust and slapped him across the face. The sound cracked like a whip in the quiet hallway.

“You blind, pathetic idiot,” Cassandra hissed, tears streaming down her face. “You enabled her for years! Every time she attacked Emily, you took Mom’s side! Every time Mom demanded Mia’s documents, you handed them over like a good little boy!”

“Cassandra, what are you talking about?” Jackson yelled, holding his red cheek.

Cassandra turned to me and handed me the leather ledger. “Emily, Mom has been planning this for over a year. I found this in her safe when I went to look for her spare car keys.”

I opened the notebook with trembling hands. Inside were pages of meticulous, handwritten notes in Lorraine’s elegant cursive.

Entry 1: ‘Emily doesn’t deserve a child. She works too much. Mia is my second chance to raise the perfect daughter.’

Entry 2: ‘Jackson will never stand up to me. He is weak. I can convince him Emily is unstable.’

Entry 3: ‘Real estate lawyer confirmed the property in Mexico is ready. Cash only. Once Mia is with me across the border, Emily will never have jurisdiction to get her back.’

The ledger contained financial transactions spanning a decade. Lorraine had run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal gambling debts in underground casinos across the state line. To pay off her loan sharks and escape the country, she had arranged a private, off-the-books arrangement with an international child broker to take Mia, while using our joint savings to buy off-grid property in a non-extradition territory.

Jackson stared at the pages, his body shaking violently. “No... no, Mom wouldn't... this isn't real...”

“She was going to take Mia at two o'clock,” Cassandra told Detective Grant, who was reading over my shoulder. “But Mia fought her. Mia threw a tantrum because Mom ripped Rosie the doll away to throw it in the trash. When Mia screamed so loud the neighbors began looking over the fence, Mom panicked. She threw Mia into the sewing room, wedged the chair to keep her quiet, grabbed the cash, and drove off alone!”
