Chapter 15 - Sunlight on the Green Grass (The End)

Two years later.

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the porch of our seaside home. Mia, now five years old, was sitting at a small wooden picnic table on the patio, carefully painting watercolor flowers onto a large cardboard poster for her first day of kindergarten.

Her laughter danced in the gentle ocean breeze.

I sat on the porch swing, sipping iced tea, watching her with a heart full of overwhelming gratitude and peace. The trauma of that dark afternoon in Lorraine’s sewing room had not broken my little girl. With time, therapy, and an ocean of unconditional love, Mia had blossomed into a confident, bright, and endlessly joyful child.

She stopped painting, picked up Rosie—who sat proudly on the table wearing a miniature artist’s apron—and ran over to the swing, clambering up beside me.

“Mommy, what does this word say?” Mia asked, pointing to the colorful letters she had painted across the top of her drawing.

I looked at the messy, vibrant paint: F-A-M-I-L-Y.

“It says ‘Family,’ baby,” I whispered, kissing her soft curls.

“Family means people who keep you safe,” Mia said with the profound, simple wisdom only a five-year-old possesses. “Right, Mommy?”

“That’s exactly right, Mia,” I replied, pulling her into a tight, warm embrace. “Family means keeping each other safe, no matter what.”

Out on the horizon, the sun dipped into the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The past was behind us, buried beneath the weight of justice and truth. Before us lay an endless horizon of light, safety, and boundless love.
