Chapter 12 - The Handcuffs Click

“That’s enough,” Detective Grant’s voice boomed from the shadows of the living room.

Floodlights snapped on, blinding the entire kitchen in dazzling white light. Four armed officers moved in instantly, weapons drawn, shouting commands.

“Lorraine Vance! Step away from the resident and get on the ground! Do it now!”

Lorraine shrieked in terror, dropping the canvas bag of cash. Bundles of hundred-dollar bills spilled out across the wet tile floor. She tried to turn and run back through the sliding door, but Officer Rivera tackled her to the ground, pinning her arms behind her back.

Click. Click.

The steel handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

“Jackson! Jackson, help me!” Lorraine wailed, thrashing on the kitchen floor like a wild animal. “They’re hurting me! Jackson!”

The front door opened. Jackson walked in slowly, escorted by an FBI agent. He looked down at his mother lying on the floor in handcuffs, surrounded by stolen money and police officers.

Lorraine looked up at him, her eyes pleading. “Jackson! Tell them! Tell them Emily forced me to do this! Tell them you gave me permission!”

Jackson stared at her. For the first time in his thirty-two years of life, the fog of manipulation lifted completely. He saw his mother not as a matriarch to be pleased, but as a destructive monster who had destroyed his child, his wife, and his entire future.

“I’m done, Mom,” Jackson whispered, his voice cracking with utter defeat. “I’m telling the detectives everything.”

Lorraine’s face morphed from pleading to pure venom. She cursed him, screaming vile insults at her own son as the officers hauled her up and dragged her out into the pouring rain to the waiting squad car.
