Chapter 14 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

The following spring brought warm sunshine and the scent of blooming jasmine.

With the recovered funds returned by the federal court and the proceeds from the court-ordered sale of our old marital property, I purchased a beautiful, light-filled cottage three states away in a quiet coastal town near my sister’s family.

There were no cameras in the smoke detectors. No toxic phone calls. No passive-aggressive comments disguised as grandmotherly advice.

I had secured a prestigious position as the Head Pediatric Nurse at the local children’s hospital, where my colleagues valued and supported me.

Mia’s fourth birthday was celebrated in our new backyard, decorated with hundreds of bright yellow strawberry balloons and fairy lights. Cassandra had flown in to celebrate with us, having severed all ties with her mother and built a genuine, loving relationship with Mia as her favorite aunt.

Mia ran across the green grass, her pink light-up sneakers flashing with every joyful step.

In her arms, she clutched Rosie. The doll had been professionally restored by a local toy artisan, her seams reinforced with double-stitched golden thread, her button eyes gleaming brightly in the afternoon sun.

“Mommy, look!” Mia giggled, doing a little spin on the lawn before running into my arms. “Rosie says she loves our new garden!”

I caught my daughter, lifting her high into the air as she erupted into joyous laughter.

“Rosie is right, sweetheart,” I laughed, hugging her close against my heart. “This garden is ours. And nobody will ever lock our doors again.”
