Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

Daniel scrambled out of the Chairman’s chair so fast his knees hit the underside of the table, sending his blue folders scattering across the floor. He backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding his hands up in a frantic, pathetic gesture of appeasement.
"Dad! You're... you're alive! You're walking! We... we were told you were in an urgent care clinic! We were just trying to protect the company while you recovered!"
Robert didn't sit down. He stood tall, looking around the table at his directors.
"Tom, Sarah, Arthur," Robert addressed his loyal management team. "Forgive the disruption. You have been fed a web of calculated lies by a thief who happened to share my last name."
Franklin Shaw stepped forward, opening a thick leather briefcase and distributing identical red-bound audit binders to every director at the table.
"For the past thirty-six months," Franklin announced to the room, "Daniel Harrison, in conspiracy with Melissa Harrison-Vance and Tyler Harrison, has systematically embezzled over 1.4 million dollars from this corporation through fraudulent invoicing, shell company transfers, and unauthorized salary disbursements."
"That's not true! It's a clerical misunderstanding!" Melissa shrieked, jumping to her feet. "Emily is trying to steal our inheritance! She turned Dad against us!"
"Be quiet, Melissa!" Robert bellowed, the authority in his voice slamming into the room like a shockwave. "I heard your phone call in the hospital hallway. I saw the bank statements where you stole ninety-one thousand dollars while I was cut open on a surgical table. I saw the forged DNR document Daniel tried to file to ensure I never woke up!"
The room erupted into gasps. Tom Reynolds looked at Daniel with pure, unadulterated disgust. "You tried to kill your own father?"
"No! No, that's a lie! Briggs, tell them!" Daniel screamed, pointing at his crooked lawyer.
Marcus Briggs quickly packed his briefcase, took two steps away from Daniel, and raised his hands. "I was retained under false pretenses. I have no comment and I am withdrawing from representation effective immediately." Briggs bolted out the double doors without looking back.
The two uniformed police officers stepped forward, unholstering their handcuffs.
Detective Miller, a senior investigator from the Financial Crimes Unit, laid a signed warrant on the table.
"Daniel Harrison, you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and felony elder financial abuse. Melissa Harrison-Vance, you are under arrest as a co-conspirator in grand larceny and money laundering."
"Wait! What about me?" Tyler yelled, panic finally piercing his arrogant demeanor. "I didn't do anything! I just drove the truck!"
"Tyler Harrison," Detective Miller added calmly, "you are also under arrest for grand theft and submitting fraudulent commercial expense claims exceeding fifty thousand dollars."
The boardroom became a scene of absolute, humiliating ruin.
Melissa broke down into hysterical, ugly sobs as an officer pulled her arms behind her back, the metal handcuffs clicking into place around her manicured wrists. Tyler began swearing and thrashing, begging his grandfather to intervene, before being forcefully restrained and led out the door.
Daniel, however, didn't scream. He sank against the glass window, sliding down until he was kneeling on the floor, looking up at his father with hollow, ruined eyes.
"Dad... please..." Daniel whimpered, tears cutting clean tracks through the sweat on his face. "I'm your son. You can't do this to your own blood. Please..."
Robert looked down at him. There was no hatred in the old man's eyes—only a profound, tragic sorrow that had hardened into diamond.

"You ceased to be my son the day you decided my life was worth less than a bank transfer," Robert said quietly. "Take him away."
The officers hauled Daniel to his feet and marched him out through the glass doors. As the elevator chimes sounded in the hallway, carrying the trio down to awaiting squad cars, the executive floor fell into absolute, sacred silence.
