Chapter 12 - Melissa's Desperate Betrayal

Two weeks into her home confinement, Melissa realized that Daniel was facing up to fifteen years in federal penitentiary and that she was scheduled to go down as his primary co-conspirator.

True to her self-serving nature, her loyalty to her brother evaporated instantly.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, Melissa’s defense attorney contacted Franklin Shaw with an urgent, unsolicited offer: Melissa was willing to sign a full, sworn confession, surrender all remaining hidden offshore account keys, and testify as the state’s primary star witness against Daniel in exchange for a plea deal that reduced her sentence to probation and restitution.

Franklin brought the offer to Robert at the lake cottage.

Robert sat by the stone fireplace, a warm wool blanket over his legs, looking remarkably healthier. His color had returned, his appetite was robust, and his daily cardiac monitoring numbers were the best they had been in five years.

"What do you want to do, Robert?" Franklin asked, setting the plea proposal on the coffee table. "Her testimony will guarantee Daniel spends at least a decade in federal prison. Without her, the trial might drag out for eighteen months."

Robert stared into the crackling flames for a long time.

"Let her sign it," Robert said softly. "Let her sign the confession. But tell the prosecutor that I will not sign a letter of leniency. She made her bed; she can sleep in it."

The following afternoon, Melissa entered the federal courthouse in Kansas City and spent six hours on the record detailing every conversation, every text message, and every illegal financial transaction Daniel had orchestrated over four years.

When Daniel’s defense attorney read the deposition, he realized their case was completely indefensible.

The betrayal was total, absolute, and finalized in ink.
