Chapter 7 - The Confrontation on the Front Lawn

Before the grand boardroom showdown could take place, Daniel made a fatal, arrogant blunder.

Thinking I had hidden Robert at my personal residence in North Kansas City, Daniel and Melissa drove over in Daniel’s luxury SUV at five o'clock that evening, intending to stage a dramatic, intimidating scene.

I had anticipated their move.

Leaving Robert safely at the lake under the protection of Franklin’s private security detail, Emily and I drove back to our house to collect essential documents and clothing. Just as I pulled our vehicle into the driveway and shut off the engine, a black Range Rover screeched up against the curb, blocking our exit.

Daniel threw open the driver’s door and stormed across the manicured lawn. He was wearing an expensive Italian suit, but his tie was loosened, his hair was disheveled, and his face was bloated and red with rage. Melissa scrambled out of the passenger side, clutching a thick designer handbag, looking equally manic.

"Michael!" Daniel roared, pointing a trembling finger at my chest as I stepped out of the car. "Where is he? Where are you keeping my father?"

Emily stepped out of the passenger side, slamming her door with a sharp metallic crack. "He's where you can't kill him, Daniel!"

Daniel froze, his eyes widening in sudden shock as he saw his sister standing there.

"Emily?" he stammered, his aggressive posture faltering for a fraction of a second. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Denver!"

"I took the morning flight," Emily said, walking directly toward him with an icy, fearless stride. "I came back to clean up the disgusting mess you and Melissa made while Dad was fighting for his life in intensive care!"

Melissa rushed forward, her voice rising into a shrill, defensive screech. "Emily, don't let Michael brainwash you! He’s manipulating Dad! He took Dad from the hospital without medical clearance, took him to some shady lawyer, and froze all the company payroll accounts! Our employees can't get paid tomorrow because of your husband!"

"Shut up, Melissa!" Emily fired back, her voice echoing down the quiet suburban street. Neighbors began stepping out onto their porches to watch. "I saw the bank statements! I saw the ninety-one thousand dollars Daniel wired to Apex Horizon while Dad was hooked up to a ventilator! I saw the two hundred and eighty thousand you took to pay off your mortgage!"

Melissa’s face turned an ugly, sickly shade of chalk white. She took a step back, her mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

Daniel tried to regain the upper hand, puffing out his chest and stepping within inches of my face.

"You think you’re smart, Michael? You’re an outsider! You’re just the son-in-law! You have zero legal standing in the Harrison family or Harrison Logistics! I am the Vice President, and I hold the primary operating proxy! If you don't release Dad and unfreeze those Commerce accounts by eight o'clock tonight, I will have the county sheriff raid your property and drag you out in handcuffs!"

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I pulled my phone from my pocket, unlocked the screen, and showed him the live security feed from our front porch camera, which was recording every second in 4K resolution with clear audio.

"Daniel," I said calmly. "You are currently trespassing on my private property. You are screaming threats on high-definition video. And what you don't realize is that Franklin Shaw uploaded your embezzlement audit to the Missouri Attorney General’s Special Financial Crimes Division two hours ago."

Daniel’s eyes dilated with sheer, naked terror. "You... you did what?"

"Your game is over," I said softly. "Get off my lawn before I call the local precinct and have you arrested for criminal trespass right in front of the neighborhood."

Daniel looked at me, then at Emily’s stone-cold glare, and finally at the overhead security cameras blinking red above the porch.

He let out a guttural, furious curse, grabbed Melissa by the elbow, and dragged her back toward his Range Rover. He slammed the door, revved the engine until the tires squealed against the asphalt, and sped off down the street.

Emily let out a long, shaky breath and leaned against my shoulder.

"They’re terrified," she whispered.

"They should be," I replied, wrapping an arm around her waist. "Because tomorrow morning, they lose everything."
