Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Greed

By noon, the conference room at Shaw, Sterling & Mercer had been transformed into an active military command center.
Emily had arrived straight from the airport, dropping her carry-on luggage in the corner before throwing her arms around her father in a long, fierce embrace. Beside her sat Franklin Shaw, David Keller, and an independent forensic accountant named Raymond Cross, whom Franklin had retained on emergency retainer.
Cross, a thin man with thick spectacles and a stack of forensic digital printouts three inches high, tapped the projector remote. A massive flowchart illuminated the boardroom wall.
"What we’re looking at here," Cross began, his voice dry and clinical, "is a classic multi-tiered corporate embezzlement and elder fraud scheme."
The chart showed Harrison Industrial Supply & Logistics at the center, with dozens of red arrows branching outward into various entities:
Apex Horizon Consulting LLC (Daniel Harrison): Over the past thirty-six months, Daniel had funneled a total of $1,140,000 into this shell company under the guise of "logistics optimization software licensing." In reality, the funds were immediately routed to pay down a defaulted commercial loan on a luxury lakefront condo in the Ozarks and to service margin calls on high-risk crypto trading accounts.
Melissa Harrison-Vance: Melissa had received over $280,000 in direct wire transfers from Apex Horizon over two years, labeled as "independent marketing consulting." These payments coincided precisely with the mortgage payoffs on her suburban home and private school tuition for her twins.
Tyler Harrison: Over the past twelve months, Tyler had submitted $94,000 in fabricated fuel, travel, and vehicle maintenance expense vouchers to Harrison Logistics, while simultaneously drawing a full-time executive salary without ever logging into the corporate server.
"It gets worse," David Keller added, pulling up a second document. "When we subpoenaed the digital audit logs from St. Joseph Medical Center this morning, we discovered that three days before Robert’s surgery, Daniel attempted to file a forged Medical Power of Attorney and a Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) addendum with the hospital administrative desk."
Emily gasped, covering her mouth in horror. "A DNR? He tried to put a DNR on Dad?"
"The hospital legal compliance team rejected the filing because it lacked Robert’s verified signature and two independent witnesses," Keller explained. "But the intent is terrifyingly obvious. If complications had arisen during the cardiac valve replacement, Daniel wanted the legal authority to terminate life support before Robert ever woke up."
The room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.
Robert sat at the head of the table, his face completely expressionless, though his hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists on the armrests.
"That boy didn't just want my money," Robert said, his voice dropping into an icy register that sent shivers down my spine. "He wanted me in a cemetery."
Franklin Shaw closed the file with a thunderous slap.
"Under Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 570 and the federal elder financial abuse statutes, this is no longer a civil dispute. This is aggravated grand theft, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and attempted reckless endangerment."
"Do we call the District Attorney right now?" Emily demanded, her eyes blazing with tears of pure rage.
"Not yet," Robert said calmly. He looked up at Franklin. "When is the annual emergency shareholder meeting scheduled for Harrison Logistics?"
"Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock," Franklin replied, a grim smile spreading across his weathered face. "Daniel called it yesterday afternoon using his emergency vice-president powers, intending to vote your shares under the old Power of Attorney and elect himself Chairman of the Board."

Robert stood up slowly, using the table for support, his eyes burning with an unstoppable fire.
"Let him hold his meeting," Robert declared. "Let Daniel, Melissa, and their crooked directors assemble in the main boardroom. And at ten-fifteen, we will walk through those doors and drop the sky on their heads."
