Chapter 10 - Tyler's Careless Mistake
While Daniel and Melissa were being processed at the county detention facility, Tyler’s sheer arrogance handed the prosecution the final, undeniable nail in their legal coffin.
During the initial booking search at the precinct, detectives confiscated Tyler’s smartphone. Because Tyler had set his security PIN to his birthday and had never enabled remote wipe protocols, forensic investigators were able to mirror the device within an hour.
What they found was a goldmine of incriminating digital evidence.
In a private encrypted chat group named "The New Board", Daniel, Melissa, and Tyler had spent the last six months mapping out the entire takeover:
Daniel (May 12): "The old man’s cardiology report looks terrible. Ejection fraction is down to 35%. When he goes in for the valve surgery, that’s our window. If we execute the trust transfer while he’s on heavy pain meds, the probate court will never overturn it."
Melissa (May 14): "Make sure Michael stays out of it. If Emily finds out, she’ll fly back and ruin everything. We tell Emily the surgery was delayed."
Tyler (August 14 - Day of Surgery): "First wire cleared. Just bought the Audi RS5. Uncle Daniel is the GOAT. Let’s hope the old man’s heart doesn't hold up through the weekend."
When Franklin Shaw presented transcripts of these messages during the emergency bail hearing the following morning, the presiding judge was visibly sickened.
"In my twenty-five years on the bench," Judge Katherine Miller declared, peering over her glasses at the three defendants standing in orange jumpsuits behind the glass partition, "I have rarely encountered such cold-blooded, predatory malice directed by children against their own ailing parent."
