Chapter 5 - The Viral Video That Exploded Across Town Before Dawn

By 7:45 AM, as I pulled the minivan into the underground parking garage of the Sterling & Jenkins Law Tower in downtown Oakridge, the digital world had completely consumed Raymond Foster’s reputation.
While the children sat in the firm's private conference room enjoying hot chocolate and pastries provided by Sarah’s assistants, Sarah Jenkins led me into the corner executive suite.
Waiting for us behind a massive glass desk was Marcus Sterling—a legend in family law, known across the state as the "Titanium Scalpel" for his ability to dissect fraudulent assets and dismantle narcissistic billionaires in open court. Marcus was a sharp, sixty-year-old man with silver hair, piercing gray eyes, and a tailored suit that projected absolute authority.
On the large wall-mounted flat screen in his office, the local morning news was playing on a loop.
“...Oakridge philanthropist and developer Raymond Foster is facing unprecedented backlash this morning after a shocking revelation during last night’s Parent of the Year ceremony,” the anchor announced, showing high-definition footage of seven-year-old Chloe speaking into the microphone. “The clip, which has now amassed over fourteen million views across international platforms under the hashtag #OneLittleDetail, has prompted the Oakridge School Board to officially rescind Foster’s award. Furthermore, several regional banking partners have announced an immediate freeze on pending municipal projects tied to Foster Enterprises pending an internal ethics review.”
Marcus muted the television with a click of his remote, turned to me, and smiled with cold, professional satisfaction.
“Mrs. Foster,” Marcus said, extending a firm hand. “Your daughter Chloe has done more for our opening discovery phase in sixty seconds than a private investigator could have achieved in six months. Please, sit down.”
I sat across from him, placing my encrypted flash drive and the leather folders containing twelve years of household records onto the desk.
“Mr. Sterling, Raymond believes I have no leverage,” I began, my voice steady and clear. “He thinks that because he controlled all the bank accounts, the LLCs, and the real estate deeds, he can starve me out of legal representation and force me to surrender custody of our six children.”
Marcus let out a deep, dry chuckle. “Mr. Foster is suffering from the classic delusion of the financial abuser. He believes that secrecy equals ownership. What he fails to realize is that in this state, any asset acquired, concealed, or diverted during a twenty-year marriage is subject to mandatory equitable distribution—and when fraud is involved, the court’s wrath is swift and merciless.”
Sarah leaned forward, opening her laptop. “Eleanor, while you were driving here, my team ran a preliminary trace on the shell companies you identified last night. It’s worse than we thought—and better for our case.”
“How so?” I asked.
“Raymond didn't just hide marital assets,” Sarah explained, turning the screen toward me. “He committed blatant bank fraud. To secure the twelve-million-dollar municipal bond for his downtown plaza, he listed your boutique architectural licenses and your family’s generational trust as collateral, forging your signature on five separate loan applications over the last four years.”
My breath caught in my throat. “He forged my signature?”
Marcus Sterling leaned back, his eyes gleaming with the predatory focus of a master chess player. “He committed multiple federal felonies, Mrs. Foster. He used your clean credit, your father’s estate, and your prior professional credentials to secure commercial loans while simultaneously claiming to the IRS that you were a dependent non-earner with zero marital equity.”
Marcus stood up, walked over to the whiteboard on the wall, and began writing down a timeline in bold black ink.
“Here is our strategy,” Marcus said, his voice ringing with commanding certainty. “At 9:00 AM, I am filing an emergency ex-parte petition in the Superior Family Court. We are requesting three immediate remedies: First, exclusive temporary possession of the marital residence for you and the six children. Second, an immediate emergency restraining order barring Raymond from entering the property or contacting the children without court supervision. Third, a total freeze on all commercial and personal bank accounts tied to Foster Enterprises, with an order requiring him to pay temporary monthly child support of thirty-five thousand dollars, drawn directly from his escrow reserves.”
“Can he hide the money before the freeze takes effect?” I asked, remembering Raymond’s threat to burn the estate to the ground.

“Not a chance,” Marcus replied with a fierce grin. “The moment I file this petition, every bank within a three-state radius is served electronically. If Raymond moves so much as a single dollar to the Cayman Islands or Vanessa Reed’s accounts, the judge will hold him in direct criminal contempt and throw him in county jail before lunchtime.”
Marcus looked at me, his expression softening with genuine respect. “Mrs. Foster, your husband thought he could treat you like an unpaid domestic servant while he lived like a king. By the time I am finished with him in that courtroom, he will learn that the true architect of his success was the woman he left sitting in the shadows.”
