Chapter 10 - Hannah’s Secret Recording and the Legal Trap Raymond Never Saw Coming

That evening, as we prepared our final exhibits for Friday’s hearing, Hannah knocked softly on my bedroom door.
She was carrying an old digital audio recorder—the small dictaphone I had used twelve years ago to record client notes for my architectural firm.
“Mom, there’s one more thing you need to hear,” Hannah said, sitting beside me on the edge of the bed. “Two weeks before the Parent of the Year gala, Raymond took me to lunch. He said he wanted to ‘discuss my future college plans.’”
She pressed the play button on the recorder.
Raymond’s arrogant, smooth voice echoed from the tiny speaker:
“...Listen to me, Hannah. You’re sixteen now, old enough to understand how the real world works. When I win this Parent of the Year award, it’s going to open the door for my mayoral campaign next spring. But to make that campaign work, your mother has to be phased out. She’s dead weight. She doesn't fit the image of a progressive, dynamic mayor’s wife. I’m going to move her into a rental apartment outside the city limits, and I’m going to bring Vanessa into the house to act as your stepmother. If you cooperate with this transition, I will pay your full tuition to Harvard or Yale. If you take your mother’s side, I will cut you off completely and you won't get a single penny for college. Do you understand your options?”
Then, Hannah’s clear, sixteen-year-old voice played on the tape:
“I understand completely, Dad.”
I sat on the bed, my hand covering my mouth, tears of pure horror running down my cheeks. He had attempted to bribe and blackmail our own teenage daughter into helping him discard her mother like an old piece of trash.

“Hannah… why didn't you tell me this right away?” I whispered, pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace.
“Because I knew if I told you then, you would try to protect me and confront him alone,” Hannah said softly. “I wanted to wait until we had him in a corner where he couldn't run. Tomorrow morning in court, Mom, you play this tape for the judge. You show everyone who Raymond Foster really is.”
