Chapter 8 - The Confession of Leah Mason

By Friday afternoon, the federal pressure had reached a boiling point.

Leah Mason sat in a windowless interrogation room at the Austin Federal Courthouse, flanked by a court-appointed public defender who looked exhausted and entirely overwhelmed.

Across the steel table sat Marcus Vance and Assistant United States Attorney David Miller. A digital recorder blinked red between them.

Leah looked catastrophic. The glamorous, polished executive assistant who had strutted through my foyer in designer cashmere was gone. Her hair was unwashed, her eyes sunken with dark purple circles, wearing an oversized sweatshirt provided by a local women’s shelter.

“Ms. Mason,” Prosecutor Miller said, opening a thick binder of financial wire transfers. “You are currently facing four counts of federal wire fraud, two counts of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and interstate transport of stolen property. If convicted on all counts, you are looking at a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve to fifteen years in federal prison.”

Leah burst into violent sobs, burying her face in her hands. “I didn't know it was illegal! Evan told me it was his money! He told me he owned the company!”

“Ignorance of the law is not a legal defense, Ms. Mason,” Marcus Vance said coldly. “Furthermore, we have forensic evidence that you and Carter Vance systematically transferred four point two million dollars into an offshore account in Grand Cayman forty-eight hours before you staged that confrontation at Mrs. Sterling’s home.”

Leah’s head snapped up. “Carter took that money! He took the password and left me! He left me with the babies in that disgusting motel! I don't have a single dollar left!”

“If you want any hope of avoiding a decade in a federal penitentiary,” Prosecutor Miller stated, leaning forward, “you will sign a comprehensive sworn deposition detailing every conversation, every transaction, and every instruction Evan Rowan gave you regarding the misappropriation of company assets.”

Leah didn't hesitate for a single second.

“I’ll tell you everything,” she gasped, grabbing a pen with trembling fingers. “I’ll give you the audio recordings on my phone. Evan made me record board members to blackmail them! He told me how he planned to force Claire out of the company! I’ll testify against him in open court!”

For the next four hours, Leah laid bare the entire sordid conspiracy.

She detailed how Evan had approached her a year earlier, boasting that he needed a "submissive, fertile woman" to secure his legacy while he used corporate funds to slowly dilute Claire’s trust shares. She revealed that when she discovered she was pregnant with Carter Vance’s children, she had panicked, but Carter had convinced her that Evan’s desperate narcissism made him the perfect mark. They had intentionally played into Evan’s delusion, allowing him to believe he had performed a medical miracle.

Every word was transcribed, notarized, and sealed into federal evidence.

When Leah finally finished signing the forty-page confession, she looked across the table at Marcus with pleading, desperate eyes.

“Can you… can you tell Claire I’m sorry?” Leah whispered. “Can you tell her I didn't know who she really was?”

Marcus Vance closed his briefcase, stood up, and adjusted his tie.

“Claire Sterling doesn't care who you thought she was, Ms. Mason,” Marcus replied smoothly. “She only cares that you are no longer in her way.”
