Chapter 10 - The Federal Indictment

The following Monday morning, the final hammer of justice fell.
At 9:00 AM, the United States Department of Justice held a live press conference from the Western District of Texas. Special Agent-in-Charge Teresa Morales stepped up to the podium before a sea of flashing cameras and national news correspondents.
“Earlier this morning,” Agent Morales announced, “federal agents arrested Evan Rowan at a private residence in Travis County. Mr. Rowan has been formally indicted by a federal grand jury on eighteen counts of wire fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated money laundering.”
The screen behind the podium flashed Evan’s official mugshot.
He looked hollow, broken, and unrecognizable. The proud billionaire who had spent years boasting about his self-made empire was now an inmate wearing an orange federal jumpsuit, facing up to twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal correctional institution without the possibility of parole.
Agent Morales continued: “Additionally, former corporate assistant Leah Mason has entered a guilty plea for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is fully cooperating with the federal government. A nationwide fugitive warrant has been issued for Carter Vance, who remains at large.”
A reporter raised his hand. “Agent Morales, what is the status of Sterling Meridian Capital and Mrs. Claire Sterling?”
“Mrs. Claire Sterling and the Sterling Heritage Trust have been fully cleared of any wrongdoing,” Agent Morales stated unequivocally. “In fact, Mrs. Sterling’s proactive forensic audit and immediate whistleblower reporting were instrumental in exposing this multi-million-dollar criminal syndicate. The Department of Justice commends Mrs. Sterling for her integrity and corporate leadership.”
I watched the broadcast from my executive office on the fortieth floor, sitting on the sofa with a glass of sparkling water.
Marcus Vance sat beside me, closing his legal tablet.
“The divorce decree has been finalized by Judge Thornton,” Marcus said, handing me a blue-backed legal folder. “The marriage is legally dissolved. Your maiden name, Claire Sterling, has been formally restored. The prenuptial agreement was upheld in full, and because of Evan’s criminal fraud, the court has ordered complete forfeiture of all marital assets to your trust.”
I took the pen and signed the final page.
Twelve years of marriage. Twelve years of emotional labor, sacrifice, and silent endurance. Erased with a single stroke of black ink.
“How do you feel?” Marcus asked softly, turning his body toward me.
I looked at the document, then out the window at the bright Texas sky. The clouds had completely cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant expanse of blue.
“I feel clean,” I said, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face. “For the first time in my life, I feel completely free.”
May you like
Marcus smiled, his gray eyes softening with an emotion he had held back for years. He reached out and gently placed his hand over mine.
“Then let’s celebrate, Claire. Not the end of Rowan Meridian—but the beginning of everything you were always meant to build.”
