Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Desperate Gamble

When Margaret Rowan stepped out of the private elevator onto the executive floor, she looked like a shadow of the haughty matriarch who had thrown an $80 million check at me three days ago.

Her designer silk blouse was wrinkled, her eyes were bloodshot and puffy from crying, and her signature polished composure had disintegrated into frantic desperation. She didn't have her entourage of society friends. She didn't have her luxury chauffeur. She carried a worn leather handbag and walked with an unsteady gait.

She marched toward my office, but two private security guards immediately blocked the doorway.

“Let her in,” I said from behind my desk.

Margaret rushed inside, stopping a few feet from where I sat beside Marcus Vance.

“Claire!” Margaret cried out, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and humiliation. “You have to stop this! You have to call off your lawyers and the press! Do you have any idea what you’re doing to our family name?!”

“Your family name?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Margaret, you came to my home with your son’s pregnant mistress, flaunted two children that weren't even his, and offered me eighty million dollars to vanish into thin air. You were quite eager to destroy the Rowan name yourself.”

Margaret’s face flushed crimson. She took a ragged breath and gripped the edge of my desk with trembling hands.

“We made a mistake!” Margaret pleaded, tears spilling over her mascara. “Evan was confused! He was desperate for a child! That wretched girl manipulated him! She tricked all of us! Evan is your husband, Claire! You took vows before God! You can’t leave him with nothing!”

“Evan didn't just break his vows, Margaret,” Marcus Vance interjected, his voice sharp as a scalpel. “He committed multiple federal felonies. He embezzled millions from a trust established by Claire’s father. He defrauded shareholders. And he attempted to extort eighty million dollars from a company he did not own.”

Margaret turned on Marcus, her eyes wild. “Who are you to speak to me?! This is a family matter!”

“Mr. Vance is the lead counsel for Sterling Meridian Capital and the Sterling Heritage Trust,” I said firmly. “And there is no family matter here, Margaret. There is only a corporate embezzlement case and a pending divorce proceeding.”

Margaret suddenly dropped to her knees, clutching the edge of my mahogany desk, sobbing openly. The proud, arrogant socialite who had spent twelve years belittling my background and mocking my inability to conceive was now kneeling at my feet.

“Claire, please…” Margaret begged, looking up at me with raw terror in her eyes. “The bank foreclosed on the family estate in Highland Park this morning. Evan took out a secondary bridge loan against the house to fund Leah’s shell companies. We have no money left. The country club expelled us. My friends won’t return my calls. Evan is sitting in a cheap roadside motel, drinking himself to death! If you don't release some of the trust funds, we will be living on the street!”

I looked down at her. I felt no rage. I felt no vindictive joy. I only felt a profound, liberating indifference.

“Margaret,” I said softly, “three days ago, you told me that my utility in your house was finished. You told me to take your money, leave, and never come back.”

I stood up, walked around the desk, and looked down at her.

“I am returning that exact same advice to you. Except there is no eighty million dollars. There is no settlement. Take your son, find a public defender, and never step foot in this building again.”

May you like

I nodded to the security guards.

“Escort Mrs. Rowan off the premises.”
