Chapter 12 - A Second Chance at Love

As the orchestra began playing a slow, romantic waltz, Marcus set his glass down on a passing waiter’s tray and turned fully toward me, offering his hand.
“Would the Executive Chairwoman honor me with a dance?” Marcus asked, his lips curving into that captivating, confident smile.
I laughed softly, placing my hand in his. “I would be delighted, Mr. Vance.”
We walked down the grand staircase into the center of the ballroom. The crowd parted naturally, murmuring with admiration as Marcus led me onto the dance floor.
He placed his right hand firmly and tenderly around my waist, pulling me close, while his left hand intertwined his fingers with mine. As we moved across the floor in perfect harmony, the rest of the room seemed to fade into a soft, indistinct blur.
“Claire,” Marcus said, his voice low and serious as his gray eyes held mine. “I’ve spent the last ten years watching you from a distance. I watched you give your brilliance, your loyalty, and your heart to a man who never had the capacity to appreciate you.”
My breath caught in my throat as he spun me smoothly beneath his arm, drawing me back against his chest.
“When you walked out of that house six months ago,” Marcus continued softly, “I swore to myself that I would help you reclaim everything that belonged to you. But now that the empire is built, there’s one more thing I want to make clear.”
“What is that, Marcus?” I whispered, my heart pounding against my ribs with an excitement I hadn't felt in over a decade.
“I’m not interested in being just your business partner,” Marcus said, stopping near the edge of the terrace under the starlit sky. “I have loved you since the day we met at Columbia. And I intend to spend the rest of my life proving to you what real partnership, real loyalty, and real love actually look like.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
He didn't drop to one knee in a theatrical, public spectacle meant for cameras and vanity. He stood before me as an equal, opening the box to reveal a flawless, unheated five-carat cushion-cut blue sapphire ring, encircled by brilliant diamonds.
“Claire Sterling,” Marcus said, his voice thick with raw, genuine emotion. “Will you do me the absolute honor of building a life, a future, and a true family with me?”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in my eyes.
For twelve years, I had believed that love was a sacrifice—a constant, exhausting battle to prove my worth to people who only saw me as a tool. But looking into Marcus’s eyes, I realized that true love wasn't a battle. It was a sanctuary.

“Yes,” I whispered, a tear of joy tracing down my cheek. “Yes, Marcus. A thousand times yes.”
Marcus slid the ring onto my finger, framed my face with both hands, and leaned down, pressing his lips to mine beneath the Texas stars. The ballroom erupted into thunderous applause, but in that moment, all I could hear was the steady, beautiful beating of a heart that was wholly, truly mine.
