Chapter 5 - The Phantom Arrival: Touchdown in Los Angeles Under Heavy Surveillance

The private Gulfstream touched down on the private runway at Van Nuys Airport at 4:15 p.m., four hours before Ethan’s commercial flight was scheduled to land at LAX.
I stepped down the motorized stairs wearing a tailored ivory trouser suit, dark oversized sunglasses, and carrying a secure satellite briefcase provided by Bankhaus Von Berg. Waiting on the tarmac was a motorcade of three black Cadillac Escalades, flanked by a team of six executive protection specialists in sharp dark suits.
Standing beside the lead vehicle was a tall, distinguished man in his late fifties with silver-streaked hair and an impeccable charcoal three-piece suit. It was Marcus Vance-Sterling—no relation to Ethan, but rather Arthur Sterling’s lifelong personal attorney, chief legal architect of the Sterling Conglomerate, and the trustee who had managed my family’s global affairs for over thirty years.
"Clara, my dear child," Marcus said, his deep voice thick with emotion as he stepped forward and embraced me warmly. "When Geneva alerted me to the Black Tide transmission, I nearly suffered a cardiac arrest. Are you hurt? Did that miserable scoundrel lay a hand on you?"
"I’m unharmed, Marcus," I replied, my voice steady and cold. "Ethan and his mother played their hand precisely as their pathetic, narcissistic minds dictated. They thought abandoning an orphan in a third-world country carried zero consequences."
"They are about to learn the most catastrophic legal lesson of their lives," Marcus said, opening the door of the reinforced SUV for me. "While you were airborne over the Pacific, our teams executed Phase One through Phase Four of the Contingency Protocol."
I slid into the rear leather seat, and Marcus took his place beside me as the motorcade swept smoothly out of the private airfield toward downtown Los Angeles.
"Give me the full breakdown," I ordered, opening the digital tablet embedded in the armrest.
Marcus pulled a series of certified legal files from his leather briefcase. "First: Ethan Vance’s architectural firm, 'Vance Design Group.' For the past three years, Ethan believed his firm was sustained by private venture angel investors. In reality, as per your confidential instructions when you married him, ninety-two percent of his operating capital and commercial credit lines were directly underwritten by Apex Horizon Holdings—a wholly owned subsidiary of your blind trust."
"And the status of those credit lines?"
"Terminated as of two hours ago," Marcus said with a cold, predatory smile. "We declared an immediate covenant breach due to fraudulent loan submissions and material misrepresentation. All business accounts at Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America have been frozen by court order. The payroll for his thirty-five employees will bounce tomorrow morning. His commercial landlord in Century City has already served an immediate notice of lock-out due to the withdrawal of our financial backing."
"What about the Bel-Air estate?" I asked.
"The lease on the Bel-Air mansion was held under another of your shell companies, Bellwether Properties," Marcus replied. "Ethan and Evelyn were merely listed as authorized occupants. As of 3:00 p.m. today, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Civil Division was served with emergency eviction and trespassing orders. A private security team has already changed the digital locks, placed their personal belongings in standard commercial storage units, and secured the perimeter."
"And Evelyn’s personal lifestyle accounts?"
"Evelyn's primary source of funding was a secondary platinum card linked directly to your blind trust’s discretionary pool. She spent forty-eight thousand dollars last month alone on designer boutiques on Rodeo Drive. That card was declined forty minutes ago when she attempted to pre-order five thousand dollars of duty-free luxury items on the airline’s in-flight satellite portal."
I looked out the tinted window at the Los Angeles skyline gleaming under the afternoon sun.
"What about Chloe?" I asked, my tone softening slightly. "She is an innocent child in all of this. Her biological mother abandoned her when she was a toddler, and Ethan has used her as a prop for his public image."

"We have filed emergency custody petitions with the California Department of Child and Family Services and the Family Court," Marcus assured me. "Citing criminal child endangerment, international abandonment of a spouse, and domestic fraud. Ethan will not be able to use Chloe as a human shield. We have a team of child welfare specialists and a private guardian waiting at LAX Terminal B."
"Excellent," I said, leaning back against the leather headrest. "Now, let us head to Tom Bradley International Terminal. I want front-row seats when Mr. Ethan Vance discovers he is no longer a prince, but a bankrupt criminal."
