Chapter 11 - Freefall: The Vance Family Assets Frozen by Federal Forensic Auditors

By Monday morning, the collapse of Ethan and Evelyn Vance had become the lead story across Los Angeles financial and social media circles.

The Los Angeles Business Journal ran a front-page exposé: VANCE DESIGN GROUP COLLAPSES OVERNIGHT AMID MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT AND FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

The architectural firm’s Century City offices remained locked and guarded by federal marshals. Dozens of furious subcontractors, unpaid interior designers, and high-profile clients whose building projects had been abruptly abandoned gathered outside the building, shouting at the television news cameras.

Meanwhile, inside the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, Ethan Vance sat in an orange prison jumpsuit, his face sunken, dark circles under his eyes, staring through the thick glass partition at his public defender.

"Where is my private attorney?!" Ethan screamed into the prison telephone receiver. "I hired Robert Shapiro’s firm! Why aren't they here to post bail?!"

"Mr. Vance, be quiet and listen to me," the weary public defender replied. "Shapiro’s firm withdrew their representation three hours ago when your retainer payment bounced. Every single bank account, credit line, investment portfolio, and real estate asset associated with your name, your firm, or your mother has been frozen under a federal Mareva injunction obtained by Bankhaus Von Berg."

"My mother!" Ethan shouted, panicking. "My mother has family jewelry! She can pawn her diamond necklace for bail!"

The public defender sighed heavily. "Your mother is currently being held in the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood on felony charges of conspiracy to commit grand larceny, insurance fraud, and criminal child endangerment. Furthermore, the jewelry you're referring to was seized this morning by the FBI—turns out it was purchased with funds siphoned from the Apex Horizon trust. You are completely indigent, Mr. Vance."

"No... no... Clara wouldn't do this to me!" Ethan cried, slamming his fists against the glass. "She’s my wife! She loved me! Tell her I want to see her! Tell her I’ll sign whatever she wants!"

"Mrs. Sterling has already filed for an expedited annulment based on fraud and material misrepresentation," the attorney said coldly. "She has also secured a permanent lifetime restraining order against both you and your mother. She will never speak to you again. And quite frankly, Mr. Vance... you’re looking at fifteen to twenty years in federal prison."

Ethan slowly lowered the phone. The reality of his absolute, irreversible destruction crashed down upon him like a concrete slab.
