Chapter 10 - Chloe’s Confession: The Truth Behind Evelyn’s Twisted Inheritance Plot

In a quiet, comfortable private room inside the airport’s VIP administration suite, ten-year-old Chloe sat on a plush sofa, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, sipping hot chocolate.
A licensed child welfare advocate and a trauma counselor sat nearby, speaking softly with her, while I stood quietly in the doorway.
When Chloe saw me, her eyes lit up, and she dropped her mug onto the coffee table, running across the room and throwing her small arms around my waist.
"Clara!" Chloe cried, burying her face in my jacket. "Grandma said you abandoned us! She told me on the plane that you hated me and that you never wanted to see me again!"
My heart broke for this innocent child. I knelt down on the carpet, wrapping my arms tightly around her, smoothing her hair.
"Chloe, look at me," I said gently, wiping the tears from her red cheeks. "I would never, ever abandon you. Your father and your grandmother lied to you. They took my phone and my passport while I was sleeping so I couldn't protect you."
Chloe sniffled, nodding slowly. Then, reaching deep into the pocket of her oversized hoodie, she pulled out a small, folded piece of crumpled paper.
"I found this in Grandma’s purse when she was in the bathroom at the airport in Bangkok," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling. "Grandma told Daddy that once they got rid of you, Daddy was going to get ten million dollars from an insurance company, and they were going to send me to a boarding school in Switzerland so I wouldn't be in the way of their new life."
I took the paper and unfolded it.
It was a handwritten schedule—in Evelyn Vance’s handwriting—detailing a step-by-step plan:
Strand Clara at Amanpuri (No phone, no ID).
File missing person report in US after 30 days.
Execute corporate bankruptcy transfer via forged proxy.
Collect accidental overseas death indemnity policy.
Enroll Chloe in Institut Le Rosey (Permanent residential placement).
Evelyn hadn't just plotted my destruction; she was planning to discard her own grandchild the second the insurance money cleared.
The child advocate standing behind me looked at the paper with absolute horror, immediately logging it into the official protective custody record.
"Chloe," I said, looking into her innocent eyes with fierce, unyielding maternal determination. "You are never going to a boarding school. You are never going to be abandoned by anyone ever again. I promise you."
"Can I stay with you, Clara?" Chloe asked, clutching my hand. "I don't want to live with Daddy and Grandma anymore. They’re mean. They yell all the time."
"Yes, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "You’re staying with me."

With the emergency custody filings already approved by the Los Angeles County Family Court, and with the overwhelming evidence of Ethan’s criminal neglect and fraud, Chloe was officially placed under my temporary legal guardianship.
The Vance family’s last remaining tether to innocence had been completely severed.
